Attached is a photo I took of a local woodpile. I'd like to try to duplicate it. Is anyone familiar with this technique? What is in the center? Any construction tips? Thanks. [Linked Image]

Sometimes people just have too much time on their hands.

It looks like more of the same on the inside to me T-Rex, just a smaller circle stacked the same.

Air flow. For drying.

it's sort of a take on the holtz hausen or beehive

save your poles 2-4 inches around and 10 feet long or so
you bridge side to side in piles with these and they they hold better

some people put a tarp over the top others don't

The center is hollow, and the thing I like about those is that internal cavity where you can just throw your odd shaped pieces...They are snake magnets in the summer though, might get a little sporty if you dig into the pile for a summer camp fire, Lol.

I've seen stacks shaped like a train locomotive and other fanciful designs, there's some talented wood stackers out there, on the other hand, I've witnessed wood that was "stacked" aka dumped in a big pile as close to the front door as possible... Lot of room between those options, lol

Thanks. One more question: Does this thing have a name? I tried to look it up on the internet, but kept getting results for the holts hausen, which is much more compact, but, doesn't provide anywhere near the air circulation I was looking for.

Like stacking on used RR ties...Gets the wood up off the ground with good circulation underneath the stack.

Plus they last for a very long time.

Also, if you criss cross your stacking & leave 3-5 inch spacing between stack columns, it provides better air circulation.

I've got stuck down in the bayou twice for the holidays and the cajuns will stack seasoned wood up like that for a bonfire. It burns hot for many hours and between the heat and the spicey gumbo yer only choice is to raid the cooler.

They can't speak much English but they sure know how to throw a party down there.

Cute, but far too much wasted space inside!

Most Dutch people are mostly of Germanic descent, with a small bit of Celtic influence. Most German people are of mostly Germanic descent, with a small bit of Italian descent. The Dutch and German languages are very similar. Over 80% of the words are basically the same.

You basically married a Kraut anyway.

oil those timbers and they last even longer

cheap cinder blocks work well to stack on also and don't rot , if you can find a demo site even better
we took out a fire wall years ago we hauled so many block back the farm

silo staves work also

I guess cheap is relative 1.78 each for 8x8x16
but when you think about what RR ties cost it depends on what you can get 25-30 for used and 40+ for a new one

if you do the cinder blocks on 18 inch centers making rows you can get more wood on fewer blocks

a 8 foot row is 12 dollars your first row costs you 24 then 12 for each additional row

demo sites for cheap but labor intensive block , is it's own not cheap.
