If you’re following anybody trapping, there’s a problem.

A lot of folks internet it, give it a go, realize it sounds easier than it is and give it up. When folks say, “I don’t know how you do it”, they are talking about the frustrations of lucky critters and the adjustments required, not the actual setting of the traps.

I dont worry too much about what fellow fur trappers did. More worried when its the landowner that has tried to catch em.1

A lot depends upon the species and methods. Sure there will be fewer numbers, but the idea that all that remain are trap smart is not always the situation. Waiting a few weeks many times there is movement of other animals into the area. Also if one uses different methods then there is that difference as well. I see that with coons a lot. Sometimes I will go back a month later and set the same trails or areas and catch coons. Rats to some extent on my river line do as well and so do mink. I don't have enough experience with coyotes to know that but when we had reds here they would migrate in as well. We don't have a beaver in our county so I don't know how they move other than the spring dispersals.

Not sure about all animals, but I know coon will filter back into an area. I have an area on my line that another trapper (and he is an excellent coon trapper) hits about 2 weeks ahead of me, and I always catch coon there. I sometimes even use the same pockets he dug when he was there.

I wouldnt do it if the area has already been trapped you will be harming the line.Plus you will be checking a lot of empty traps.

Hard pressed to find a fur trapper in the south, heck the yankee fur isn't even worth catching anymore! ADC trappers are about it now days and most of them wear clown shoes as well.

Not my circus, not my clowns.

Ain’t much for fur trappers these days.

Following the “night dawgers” is a much bigger issue in the coyote world.

And not because they kill anything!
