I got my first Badger today. Of course, it was in my best-looking Bobcat set and I didn't think there were badgers on this side of the property. Not prime or huge, I am planning to tan it myself and make a hat or something else from it.

Cool looking critter.
Never trapped or skinned any but have worked a few tanned pelts-nice fur and leather to work with.
I understand they prime up fairly late?

Nice catch. How big was it?

Are you going to keep it as a pelt or taxidermy?

I've seen a handful of road kill badgers, most in Darke County, Ohio. I've never seen a live badger not in captivity. It seems like we would have a decent population in Ohio, but maybe they are too dependent on colonial ground dwelling rodents like ground squirrels and prairie dogs?

The ones I always caught this time of year are nowhere near prime and Boco they stink to high heaven. You ain't missin much but I agree when they are tanned there are lots of great things to be done.

They look much better in January. They come out of their den during warm spells and you can see their fresh mounds of dirt from quite a ways in the snow covered fields. You can tell if a den is occupied if it is plugged or not. Only caught a hand full of them over the years but they are cool!

We don't have prairie dogs, or ground squirrels that I'm aware of, but we do have a bunch of badgers. Not sure why you don't, they pretty much live on mice and rats here.

Most of them that I catch are happy to see me, and VERY polite...despite their bad reputation.
