I have a property where I've just gotten permission to bait for deer (legal here in ohio) as long as I trap the racoon, I also see quite a lot of coyote there but the landowner has a couple of fox that he's partial to and has requested I don't harm, is there anything I can do to target coyotes and avoid the fox? I figure coyote urine at my sets should help but is there anything else?

Up your pan tension to 8 pounds, but nothing in foolproof
I have a farm that doesn't want me to catch their fox, first check last season I had a deep caught red.
In my opinion it was running and just hit the wrong spot as it was traveling the farm lane
I explained to the farmer what had happened IMO and I'll be trapping that property again this year

Using dog proofs for the coon will probably prevent you from catching fox in those sets.

I don't think any set for coyotes, would not have a likelihood of catching fox too, even if you increase the necessary pan tension. If you do catch a red fox, they are relatively easy to let go. Grey fox are a little harder to let go, but not hard to let go.

fox respond to coyote pee also. real coyote pee brings them right in. they are easy to release.

If you can use cable's, you can release fox unharmed.

I upped pan tension on Bridger #2's a few years ago to try to avoid gray fox since they weren't worth much. I caught more fox that year and all was by both front feet. I wish I would have set a camera to see what they were doing. I picture them pouncing

Do you remember what attractor (bait/lure ect) you were using?
I've caught quite a few coon in k-9 sets by both front feet
Everytime it happened I was using peed up mouse nest
I assume that they were trying to get the mouse to come out.

Fox are easy to release but if the temps were much below freezing it is not advisable to release foot-caught critters.

I can picture releasing a cable-caught fox but would love to see a video of it. Anybody have one they can post here?

Eh...wot?

I don't have a video, but I use a 5' piece of rebar.
I take 2 step into the catch circle and pound the rebar in
Back out of the circle and walk around towards the fox, it should wrap up around the rebar
Sometimes you have to do a little dancing around to get them tangled up. LoL
Now they are easier to get in the catch pole

Ummm I’ll disagree with that one. Lot of times fox will tangle and choke itself. Stick with footholds and use catch pole. Might be better to just dog proof the coons and try calling to kill the coyotes. If something happens to the Fox and you are setting foot holds it will be your fault.

Under PA law if your CR catch becomes entangled you made an illegal set.

That's the same method I use for dispatch (non-firearm) so I don't have to chase them around the giant catch circle.

So, once you have them in the catch pole you loosen the CR, slip it over the head and up towards the handle end of the pole, yes?

Eh...wot?

I cut the CR behind the lock
That piece of cable is usually worthless anyway
And then pick up the pieces
