This 1898 photo depicts Chilkoot Pass on the trail to the Klondike goldfields. The Klondike Gold Rush began in late 1896. Thousands of hopeful miners, known as "stampeders", were making their way to the Klondike via the Chilkoot trail from Dyea, Alaska. Canadian officials required that any person entering the region carry a full ton of supplies with them to ensure their survival in the harsh arctic climate. One of the men that made this trek recorded his experiences in a book, saying that it took forty trips to the top of this pass to haul all of his supplies.

I was stationed at Fort Richardson in 1971. Spent many an evening at Chilkoot Charlie's in Anchorage. It was a very unique establishment!

My stepmother had a couple reatives that did that trek. The family has a journal that the two kept of the trip.
I haven’t seen it, however she had read it and it was really interesting! Quite a feat just to get started out on that trip.

I read that majority of the miners failed in their endeavors. The ones who got rich were the storeowners selling them supplies. Great photo!

bunch of pictures from dawsons museum. Ive always found the goldrush pretty interesting. Porters and thieves made a lot of money too. Ive always heard a lot of people cashing in gold werent the ones that did the hard work of finding it.
