Anyone have any experience with the CVA accura MR-X. Seems like I’m so busy in September I can’t find time to bowhunt. We have some restrictions on muzzleloader here in Oregon but there are some decent tags you can draw. I have an old Thompson center side lock but thinking of getting an inline for ease of cleaning. What’s your opinion ?

it depends on the inline , what the actual cleaning process is

I can break down a TC side lock and have it clean quite fast with my nipple wrench , wedge puller tool and a turnscrew

now if your wanting to run a powder like blackhorn 209 then the inline makes more sense

what are your Oregon restrictions ?

inlines are easy to push a bad charge and round out of , but not alway easier to clean.

Oregon we can’t use Pellets , loose powder only. No optics, you can use fiber optic open sights, no center fire primers, no plastic sabots just lead or copper bullets. Seems easier to pull the plug out and clean.

My buddy and I just hunted a draw hunt in pouring rain. His cva wouldn't fire with a 209 cap. My Thompson was water proof

CVA makes a northwest version that shoots musket caps I think. Possibly #11 caps.

many places mean no 209 when they say no center fire , I did a quick search and Oregon does mean no 209 also it seems.

so your priming options are flintlock , #10/#11 caps , or 4 wing Musket caps

Williams makes a nice aperture sight for the rear that mounts to the tang on the TC side locks , replace the front with a Globe sight and your preferred insert.

work up a load for a conical or maxi ball and I think you are there with the TC you already have

cleaning isn't that hard and the TC aperture sight mounting to the tang keeps it off your barrel so you can stick the end in the bucket of water without having to clean out your sight every time.

if you really want to go inline , I know this one meets the western restrictions
https://www.muzzleloaders.com/articles/welcome-to-knight-the-bighorn/
I have one of these and I would trade it for a TC in good shape , because I bought it when I needed an extra gun for 4-H an I don't use it much it takes 4 wing musket caps
mine is blued steel with a black plastic stock.
it would get you the faster twist rate for heavy conical where the TC side lock is 1:48 where the bighorn is 1:28

yup that would work , they add holes to the breach plug to make it "open" and replace the breach plug with one that takes musket caps typically.

I have a traditions I got for a idaho hunt that never happened, I say that because Washington just legalized 209 primer guns and you cannot convert traditions to 209 without a kit that is no longer made. I'm guessing they'll be some good deals on used ones just north of you. Some of the older kmights are nw legal and a stainless used one can be found for $200.

No excuses makes bullets you'll want to look into. Order a sizing pack and you can determine the exact size bullets you'll want. If your trying to go hunting this year Still I don't think you'd go wrong with a cva or a traditions. Musket caps are extremely difficult to find Here, track of the wolf does have them, if you can't find them locally order immediately if your trying to hunt this year yet.

I really like my mrx 50 cal. Easy to shoot, load, and care for. Very precise. Northwest version for me here in Idaho. Musket caps , exposed breach, iron sights and loose powder required. 338 gr Powerbelt Platinums, 100 grains Triple 7 3f, gives 1550 fps and about 2.5 moa at 100 yds. Very good for my aging eyes and no scope.

I’ve never seen a cva that wasn’t accurate and great customer service. . I have a 15 yo or so accura v2. The stock had been getting sticky the last few years. I thought I had gotten some solvent on it. Called CVA. They said they were aware of the problem and sent me a new stock.

Square, that makes my decision easier. I like good customer service even though you hope not to use it. I had a customer that just passed away last year. Anyways he was in the Holiday farm fire and lost his shop. Leopold sent him a coupon for a discount, Vortex sent him new scopes. Changed my mind. The safe kept everything in a nice box. The fire was so hot it twisted a big I-beam in the shop.

I'm looking into the no excuses bullets, Thor also has solid copper I think same deal buy a size pac. This is for next years hunting if I draw a tag. I have killed two elk with patched round ball years ago, but would like to have more knockdown power.

So I found one about 40 miles from me, I guess I can get my hands on one and see what I really think. They have them on a Black Friday sale too so who knows what might happen.

We have a pair of Accura MR that shoot very well and are a pleasure. Mounted some Burris fullfields on them and they shoot very nice

I should add ours are easy to clean as well and come apart easy - I hate cleaning guns so that was a priority. Ours also came with a breach plug for Blackhorn 209 powder included - it is supposed to be easiest to clean up but rather expensive and we couldnt find it when we got ours. We use 777 pellets and they do superb with hornady xtp

I have an older CVA. It is accurate. It's a 54. Put a aperture sight on it. Use musket caps and Hornady hollow base bullets. It does have one problem that only effects me when shooting for practice especially on a bench.
It weights 5 1/2 lbs. It has a hollow synthetic stock. IT also has Pachmyr pad now.
I only hunt antelope with it. 4 year draw so far, sometimes 3 years. Killed 2 missed two. One due to antelope fever and older eyes 100 yard shot. Second one a hang fire only got some hair off it's back. 60 yard shot. Powder needs to have a slow dump then the butt of the gun tapped on the ground to make sure it fill the breech plug before a bullet is loaded.
I like cleaning it much better then the side lock I used before it.
