Good question Peeler,

I wonder what tariffs are already in place on China fur imports? I seem to recall that the most recent "boom" around 2013 happened when some of the big China buyers figured a way to get around the tariffs? And the "bust" that occurred shortly after was when they were caught and those tariffs were enforced?

If i remember right, those tariffs are between 15 to 30 percent for wild furskins and were much lower for minkskins. I thought the import of rawskins got banned during covid?

Yep. If I recall correctly some of the bigger players in the fur market over there got sent to prison with lengthy sentences.

That's the way it's looking. The pieces are falling into place.

So if China already has 15-30 tariffs on raw fur then maybe anything Trump might put on should be considered retaliatory. Any way you look at it, if the China Tariffs happen to get lifted due to a larger tariff kerfuffle with China it could benefit the fur market.

Maybe the 25% tariff is one reason they don't buy high end fur, instead focusing on those 2-3 dollar skins.

What never ceases to amaze me is that $20-$40 worth of beaver fur gets turned into a $200 hat or a $400 pair of gauntlets.. apparently I need to learn to tan and sew

Since i do both, i can tell you the trapping, skinning, and put up takes more skill and work and danger than the sewing part.

Simple fix don’t sell until the surplus is used up. Things would change no matter what the tariffs are.
