So while on a deer drive with a handed down to me Savage 99 I noticed the safety slide was missing. Delicately using a screwdriver I was able to slide the safety mechanism to fire in order to remove the chambered round.

Would like to attempt the repair but not certain what parts (beyond the slide) are needed. Here are some photos of the safety slide area:

I would take it to a gunsmith.

No gunsmith, on my old exploded drawing it looks like number 8 safety button fits in the slot and number 25 hammer indicator spring holds it in place. y drawing has placement arrows not shown on yours.

All you can do is take it apart and see what is missing. Take lots of pictures to show how it goes back together because by the time the parts arrive it'll be easy to forget how it came apart.
