For states that require deer stops, how bad is fur damage?

In my experience with coyotes it’s not fur damage so much as the prolonged death especially on female or younger animals. A break a way is much more ethical and works as intended on leg caught deer or livestock.

I never used them but have heard that red fox will saw their head off the pelt if held alive with something like that on the snare.

Here in ohio we have to use the deer stops also. We can also use the breakaway instead which i would recomend. The deer stops really do most of the damage if you catch them around the hips if they get through without getting around the neck which we have to use restraints instead of snares so they work it harder if it doesn't make a neck grab. I need to get some breakaways and change mine around.

Agree with this. Complete closure. Let the break away do its job if it is needed.

Deer stops on beaver can be rough on the fur. No B.A.D.s allowed here...would think they'd be an improvement over deer stops.

If you don't neck snare with em you'll get bad mark. Which goes for snares without em too,it's just way worse. If I can use BADs I do

I've snared hundreds of red fox in snares with deer stops. So long as you neck snare them, there will be ZERO deduction from your fur buyers, guaranteed.

Thanks all. Experience is the answer on this one.

First pic, coyote at the bottom has a sawed head.
And the one on the right is a jellyhead.
I blew up the pic and see it plain.

I’ve gotten a couple fox that had water heads. I just wash them, dry for a day before putting on the stretcher fur side in, and turn when the skin is cardboardy. It’s a couple of extra steps but they sure look nice after washing. AND I haven’t caught enough fox to see that it impacts my put up time.

As for coyotes, I know nothing. Haven’t snared one yet.

We use BADs here but I had 2 deer get into snares which didn’t open the BADs. I use a short snare (~40 inches) for coon so there wasn’t enough room to get a full head of steam. This is why I’m thinking of going to deer stops.

On short critter snares you're definitely better off with deer stops because on fox and coon, that height of snare is perfect for foot snaring deer. I do use BADS on my beaver snares but where I use them there's no deer issues
