can or will it affect tanning, has anyone try tanning a freezer burned hide. I found an otter at the bottom of my freezer, and it has some burn on the belly legs and tail, I put it up, and thinking of sending it out with other fur, I just don't want to waste my money. it's not really bad,

I have had freezer burn tan up fine on pelts that have been very clean and no fat left on them, also have seen then tan up not so good either ! I think it's just a time thing really, so I don't take chances any more with others freezer stored pelts, unles I can see it personaly !

I don't usually bother with trying to get old fur or buy from freezers that have been in them for a long time, two or more years, just me others it might not bother them

Just do know that if it looks burned and shrunk down, it is not going to be the same as other pelts would be !

The hide in the middle is completely freezer burnt. It would not except much salt.
It was a last catch from an older trapper here who had past on.
It was one of two his wife had. The other had been plastic packaged so was not burnt. I tanned both for her. To my amazement the freezer burnt one came out fine.
I have had small freezer burns on several hides and all were fine after tanning which I do my self. Seems like in the freezer burnt parts the hair is set as it is when board drying.

Rehydrate it in salt water if it rehydrates well flesh it again if needed and by that time if it does not slip it will dress well I found a mink hide in my freezer that was 12 years old looked like crap I use Bocos method of dressing and it turned out great.
