I have a Remington Model 700 ADL 30-06 from the mid 70's. Used it for a few years, then into the safe it went. Decided to use it again, got it out of the safe this fall and discovered that the bolt is stuck. It is in the fired position, so I know there is no ammo in it. I hope Mackthediver finds a solution to his issue. This may help me with mine.

On my Mossberg 800 in 30-06 the extractor was heat treated wrong and broke off, Might have happened where the bolt cant rotate to open.

Couple of thoughts:
1. make certain the chamber is empty as noted above.
2. Is the bolt indicating that it is in the fired or unfired condition ? Should be able to tell by the bolt. Maybe not on that gun.
3. Point it down and pull the trigger ......and try to open the bolt.
4. Put forward pressure on the bolt handle and try to lift it

from an interesting post ......

They were a budget rifle, and there was considerable difference in the short (800) actions and the long (810) actions.
The 800 uses a Weatherby style full diameter bolt with two rows of 3 lugs, while the 810 had two rows of two lugs that were larger in diameter than the bolt body.
The three lug arrangement with it's 60 degree bolt throw lacks camming power both opening and closing which requires you to really slam the bolt handle around. Since it is tacked onto the bolt with a silver disk, electo welded. Breaking them loose is quite possible.
The firing pin is of the Arisaka piston type, and there are two different versions, the latter being better.
I believe they were first made for Western Auto under the Western Field brand around '65, and with the Mossberg name a couple of years afterward. They seem to have been withdrawn from the market about a decade later.
They certainly look good, and are quite strong, but the safety only blocks the trigger, not the firing pin, and like the Remington 788 can never be fully trusted. Keep your chamber empty until you spot the game.

Could be the grease they put inside the bolt froze up solid.

Little update.
This is where the gun is at now and bolt still won't move. He did take one screw out of the trigger set. That moved some and he said now he can't get that screw back in. Plus bolt still doesn't move. So he poked around on line. Found a place he ordered parts list and take down procedure. Once he gets the break down schematic. He will decide if he wants to take it apart himself? Or take it to a gun Smith. I'm sure with break down instructions if they are decent he will figure this out himself. He doesn't want something to go flying out and not knowing what or where it goes.. He has a very broad range of skills I think he can do it.

There is a view of a rifle most people never see or realize what they are looking at. Forget the barrel, remove the scope and mounts........remove the trigger and magazine, and what you are left with is the action. Does not look like much, but is a highly complex contraption. The high end one's now costing well over $1,000.

Yeah Ray we already talked about that.
I trust Jeff with it myself and his boy has become pretty good too Im told.. .
Problem is my brother lives in Madison. He called his trusted gun guy that is retired. Of course he wasn't giving any advice on phone without gun in hand. He did give my brother a couple names and numbers of guys he thought could help. My brother right now is in holding pattern until he gets the take down directions and the schematic. He has 3 other rifles he can use if he decides to do the up coming doe hunt.
