Raccoon I caught yesterday had patches of thin fur with quite a bit of skin visible. Here's a picture:

[Linked Image]

Raccoon I caught today in roughly the same spot also had some thin fur on its belly, although I didn't have my phone with me so didn't get a picture of that one.

My instincts are telling me that this isn't normal, but I'm also not an expert on raccoons. I know that coyotes by the end of the season will "rub" the fur off their shoulder area and it will thin out. Maybe there's something going on with raccoons this time of year that I don't know about.

Any thoughts?

Looks normal to me except for the blood.

Thanks. I just hadn't seen that much bare skin on a coon before, so I wasn't sure. All the brown on the coon in that photo is skin.

The blood was because I shot this one. It was toe-caught and being a pain when I tried to use the dispatch pole. I didn't want it to pull out.

There was no blood with today's coon.

Okay, thanks. So it sounds like some thin patches of fur are nothing to worry about.

I agree a thin spot, possibly from what ever it was crawling in and out of all the time.

At times the raccoon caught in the dp will rub fur down by contacting the dp as it attempts to get out....normal
