Looking forward to setting a short line this year,no TM members coming up this year for a bucket list bobcat or marten.Yesterday and overnight we got 7 plus inches of really wet heavy snow.Woods roads were tough today trees and branches bent over the road or busted laying across the roads.I had to cut 3 trees laying across the roads this morning to get to a couple of fox, coyote traps I have out.Didn't see much for tracks today,a few days ago when I set the couple of sets I saw a fair amount of marten tracks even a couple of fisher tracks and two bobcat tracks.Merl and myself are planing on putting out 5,6 marten boxes and 3,4 bobcat locations. No plans to trap a limit of bobcats this year 2,maybe 3 and 4 marten if possible.Good luck to all the MN trappers hopefully you can take a kid along, have fun, hopefully we don't get dumped on with a bunch more snow....

The rumor is that I will have company waiting for me when I get home to catch Otter, Cats, Fisher and Marten. Hopefully they remember the spots from years ago otherwise we can start on Sunday.
I have nothing clever to put here.

Setting a few sets. Did have both cat and fisher sign a week and a half ago. Have not seen any sign since but will set on the old sign and hope for the best. Good luck everyone.

Looks to be a fair amount of marten out there, you coming up to the cabin to trap or closer to home? I agree Rick. The marten sign is encouraging. The partridge sign not so much lol. I got one Friday. I'm going to have to work hard to hit my goal on those

I won't be around for the fisher season or the first two weeks of bobcat this year. Will be heading south for a few weeks to trap coyote and bobcat in Kansas. I did find bobcat tracks last week so set up a bait pike close by. Hope it finds it by the time I get back.

Wish we didn’t have so many wolves and could make a reasonable bait pile without collecting every piece of roadkill known to man! They clean a pile up in a hurry. Good luck down in Kansas! Hope the weather cooperates. Hope this little snow continues to be able to identify tracks decent. Happy trapping! ScottW

Scott you can take about half of ours another inch or more today 8" to 9" up here! Send it down after Thursday night so we can have a couple more days of good lake and swamp freezing! Happy trapping! ScottW

A foot of snow on the swamp right now would be a good thing

I would rather get some frost in them first. The Ash swamp still had open water in it yesterday and no frost at all. I will need to take the Tundra and run a track through it so we will have a sidewalk to walk on.

No plans at this time for fisher since I have seen almost no sign the past year or so here but have managed to fill my 4 otter tags. in the past week Glad I am done with them since it is cold in the water on old hands.
I'm just happy to be here! Today I'm as young as I'll ever be and and older than I've ever been before!

I've picked up 2 otter so far, it's definitely tough on the fingers some days. I do have shoulder length gloves, but I never remember to bring them, they've been under the back seat of my truck still brand new since like June or July lol

Some of us are not as tough as you and wear rubber gloves with wool liners. I do all of that and use heat pads inside of them and still freeze my hands. Poor circulation. Just wait until you get to be old.

Bobcat boxes are baited, going to load them in the trailer tomorrow or Friday. This is good weather to get the bait to stick firmly into the back of the boxes too. I only plan to run a few sets and will focus on riding along with the "almost" non residents that are coming.

This isn't uncommon at least not up here. I think the warmest I saw on the pickup was minus five. Sun is shining and little wind, had to put a hoodie on for awhile. Yesterday it was fairly windy and sub zero highs. It was a little brisk.

My wife and I went out today. Tough going, more snow than I thought. I got seven boxes out for Marten. See what happens.

It was a struggle but we got a line out. I think I spent more time cutting trees out of the way then trapping. Might be the worst I can remember laying down from the heavy wet icy snow we got the other day.

The roads you all talk about having to cut apart downed trees after heavy snow fall, are they gravel "township" roads or just various two-wheel tracked trails ("unimproved" roads) through the forests and maybe some of the drier bogs, although is there any bogs dry up there this year?

I thought you MN guys could catch 5 critter combo of marten and fisher or does it vary by management unit?

10 to 12 years ago it was 5,it should be more than 2,but we are not able to make the laws.3 to 4 would be fine,it's just like our bear season up here, now the last 10 years it takes 4 to 5 years to draw a tag.We are covered up in bears, this year we had 3 baits out,26 bears on three baits.sorry to say the DNR doesn't manage animals JUST PEOPLE it's sad... I don't know where to draw the lines but I think a good part of more rural Minnesota should consider seceding from the metro Twin Cities counties and other other core locations of the nutty woke leftists of the state and return to common sense land. It might work out better than the last time secession was tried. Or maybe just wait out Tampon Tim and his ilk as they self implode in a next few years-- we can only hope

What did y Mary and I went out this morning. With the short limit I like to check traps on the way in. Checked 7 boxes all empty on the way out had one in the first trap we checked on the way in. You never know what's next. That's the magic. What was it?

Missing out on the fisher season and the first part of cat this year. Decide to take up an offer from a T-man member and got to Kansas for two weeks to catch some high dollar coyotes and maybe a cat or two. Did put out a few bait stations before I left in hopes of picking up a cat when I get back home. Good luck everybody!

Where do northern Minnesota bobcats usually fall in the hierarchy of North American bcats fur? I know they aren't western but a bit more coin than the ones in the Southeast or about the same?
I see that South Dakota GF&P people now admit there are more bobcats around the whole state nowadays. It used to be only a West River/Black Hills season, and then they opened up the counties along the Missouri River on the eastern side. Now, all of East River is open but the limit is one. The other standard rules about surrendering the carcass and hide within a time limit to the COs to do their thing. Obviously, the trapper gets a legally taken skin back and the carcass, by request [minus part of the lower jaw and anything else the state people want to take.]
The opening up of all East River came about 10-15 years too late for a local kid in eastern Minnehaha County that caught a bcat . His family had to buy back the hide the next spring at the annual GFP wildlife auction because the cat was taken where there was no season. Supposedly, the family had everyone willing not to raise their opening bid so they could get it for cheap but one hold out didn't go along so they paid handsomely to get the cat hide back.
I'm glad that wouldn't happen this year...

Most fall into Northern Cats, had a couple Central and 4 graded Western, but not the high end Western. When NAFA was going I had 6 Top Lot Northern cats and 1 Top lot Central, before cat prices went nuts my best Western cat grade Very Red HVY 1,2 belly $280 Top lot Western that year was $580.A couple years later that Mn cat would have brought $750 to $850 I bet.I know for 7 years I average over $200 on my cats with $370 being the highest,6 cats went for $300 or more in that 7 year time frame. Wow, much higher than I thought. No wonder you northern MN guys smile when you see a bcat in your set!!

In this market the average MN cat is worth all that much.
Take a special set to average over 100 -125

I'm going to wear the tires off the pickup for the next 2 weeks. Thursday is expected to be a Seattle Clipper with 12 inches of snow dumped along the boarder...good luck were the grouse evening budding in the birch trees; those ones we call "pot grouse"

Male adult marten 22" the bobcat adult female 2,3 year old judging from the teeth 40" another poor belly. We use to get a lot more with decent bellies lately they have been 2,3 or 3 bellies, been a few year's since we've had a good 1,2 belly. This bobcat will end up at the MTA tanned fur project along with some other furs, coyote, fox, mink and muskrats for now.I talked with the other trapper about an hour ago, very little critter movement for them as well 26 boxes 1 marten. Before all this wet heavy snow there was quite a few marten tracks, hope they start hunting again other wise we might not get our 4.Going to be below zero for the next few nights so that might kick start them a little, have a good evening everyone.

As 330 would say dark in the swamp,-7 here in the northern swamp. We might see the sun today, that would be nice for a change, then more snow for tomorrow, hopefully the heavier snow amounts will be further south this time around.12" in the last 10 days,it's getting harder getting around out in the big woods, some roads they don't plow and I'm on 3 of them.Good luck everyone, heading out to recover a marten or two and maybe another bobcat and possibly a fox.Have a great day....

8 below warmed up to -3 now,not a marten track to be found, they'll have to get out hunting pretty soon, when they do the 7 boxes should get a couple.Caught a yearling bobcat today, frozen foot in the Jake,I wont release a cat with a frozen foot and for sure a smaller cat wouldn't have a chance with the snow we already have.Saw two coyote tracks today, first tracks in about a week it started down one trail towards a snare, but veered off 20 some feet from the snare.I hung another snare further back on one of his tracks. We'll see if he comes back not much left there for bait I need to bring another rib cage over there.

Quite a few miles on the pickup today, more than a few on foot, seen two partridge.
Final score partridge 2, Steve zero.

It has been tough going here with hardly any animal movement. We set on sign Sunday but haven't had a snapped trap since. Hopefully this snow and cold gets them moving.

Congratulations on the catches every one! I'm kidding out on this year's fisher season in exchange for a trappingvtrip to Kansas. No fishers here but the cat sign looks promising. Only been here a few days but having a great time. No snow with the weather being low 60's during the day and down to mid 20's at night. Fur looks good right and hope to pile more up. Meanwhile I'll just have to live vicariously through T-man! Good luck everyone!

Looks like the movement has been slow state wide,I know last year when 330 was up here, same wet heavy snow shut down the marten movement then the last 3 days of the season they were really out and about.Hoping they do that again this year 3 more checks, same 7 marten boxes set on fresh tracks from 7,8 days ago...Hope the season ends with a flurry of movement for everyone.

What a great Winter wonderland day, cold but the sun was out no wind, warmed up to 1 above. No catches, but the martens were making tracks saw 4 tracks nothing real close to our boxes. There's a good chance there are marten in the traps from this afternoon since our morning check.3 fox were running around on two different woods road and 3 wolf pups and 1 adult made there round.Didn't see a cat track today, there due back fairly soon, thought for sure the one coyote was going to be waiting for me today,it was a no show there's new bait there so he/she should be back the ravens are making lots of noise.Set 2 MB 450's on drags along a woods road,we'll see if they come by and get caught for the tanned fur project.Tomorrow should be a good check!

How big an area are you running Rick? I am guessing you are covering some ground. It is snowing and blowing here again. The snow is flying sideways out of the south.

35 miles and four sets of marten tracks. It sounds like slim pickings to me. I have checked plenty of empty traps before, but little to no track is never a good sign.

Why bother. The only way I would set for marten with those kind of restrictions is if I was already running a beaver/all fur line.

2 per trapper Fisher or marten,10,12 years ago we could get 5 per person,It's been 2 for too many years it should go up to 4 per person, but we can't make the laws.DNR have some of our seasons and quota's really screwed up,for example it takes 4 to 5 years to draw a bear tag,we are covered up in bears lots of ag damage getting into bird feeders trash cans and bee hives. At least you can trap them. They are some fun to trap.

We don't do it for the money,we do it because we enjoy trapping them.Yes,it would be nice to have a higher limit like it was or have a 10 to 20 limit like some states have, but that's not going to happen anytime soon in MN.Why do you always post about our government when your government is just as messed up as ours or even worse Mr.Ms T is a poor excuse for a human being just like some of ours. You always want to stir the pot.....Your a good trapper and great at fur put up etc.your a good asset to T man,but you would be way better if you wouldn't stir the pot all the time. I guess my point went way over your head Karen. You could catch 2 marten while trapping beaver and other fur without any extra expense. Beaver ponds are fur pockets for marten fisher and cats. Doesnt make sense to drive 35 miles every day for a couple weeks checking a bunch of marten boxes to catch 2 marten, lol. Just trying to help you out but carry on grumpy.

It wasn't over my head,I said we don't do it for the money. When they allowed 5 per person and they were going for $120 to $180 us funds we did it for the money. It's a 9 day season now,and I donated most of my furs to our MTA Tanned fur project. We don't have to check our marten sets every day,3 day checks for body grips.I have a couple of bobcat sets with footholds and a few snares those need to be checked daily, again I wish we had a 48 hour check on footholds starting Dec 1st and a 3 day check law on snares, but that will never happen. I wouldnt say a 3 day check on snares is out of the question. Its something the MTA could possibly be looking to try and get this coming legislative session. Thanks for donating your fur to the tanned fur project!

,for example it takes 4 to 5 years to draw a bear tag,we are covered up in bears lots of ag damage getting into bird feeders trash cans and bee hives. You can thank fellow bear hunters for the reduction in tags. Any more the DNR spends as much effort managing hunters as they do the resource

So what's the excuse for not moving forward on the NR issue that has been voted in favor of by membership that it's just never the right time to move forward with?

Good morning,-3 with a high of 15,no sun today.2 more checks, the marten were moving yesterday finally,we should have a orange blaze or two today, the 2 cats will be coming through pretty soon I would think, maybe another Christmas cat like last year...I know they have tried for a 3 day check on snare's and each time it gets voted down, would be nice if it would pass one of these times. As for the NR we voted it through about 9 to 10 years ago, sure would be nice if that would pass also,if I remember right trapper voted 5 to 3 on that, lets get that through the state too, then 2025 would be a very good year.Have a good day everyone, here's to full body gripes, foothold with tight chains and tight cables....

You can thank fellow bear hunters for the reduction in tags. Any more the DNR spends as much effort managing hunters as they do the resource II agree with this. I was getting drawn every other year before. But the problem is where I hunt is north in the big state land forest. There was a bear bait every half mile. Now we don't see any other bear hunters and the hunting is great. I think I would rather wait a while longer and have good hunting than try to fight the crowds and all the wised up bears. Well good luck with the Fisher and Martin everyone, the last two days!!!

I'm sure that is partly it,a few years back they included the NWA in unit 12 that hurt 125 permits,175 to 200 would be nice,it doesn't have to go back to 350 permits, that was too high,125 is tooooo low. They manage the hunters not the population of the bears, the next few years are going to a real problem with bear conflicts so many sows had twins, triplets and a few with quads, yes all of the cubs won't make it to adult hood.I wish the DNR wildlife division would use more common sense.I'm in the field 50 to 80 a week working and have way too many conflicks with bears in my work,8 to 12 a year is too many, each waste well over a hour out of my day, plus it's dangerous.Like I said earlier have a great weekend on the last two days of our marten/fisher season.

I know they have tried for a 3 day check on snare's and each time it gets voted down, would be nice if it would pass one of these times. Rick When you say voted down, who is voting it down, the trappers association or has there actually been a bill that gets a vote in the legislature? Thanks

Well I was wrong never saw a fresh marten track today,I did see one really nice big Tom track today about 250 yards east of a cat location set up with a cubby a rub set and a trail set,he was heading that direction.Might see him in person tomorrow???? Saw one fresh smaller wolf track,it came up to the rub set, about 6' and turned around and headed north,I'm glad he didn't check it out closer, there's a Jake hiding under the dry leaves. One more check, hope the martens move tonight.I will keep a couple cat sets out till Christmas if the weather holds and the other spot till the 1st of the year.I'm not sure of the date to head out west, sometime around the 6,7,8 maybe as late as the 9th of Jan.

Rick When you say voted down, who is voting it down, the trappers association or has there actually been a bill that gets a vote in the legislature? Thanks Nothings been voted down on a 3 day check, at least not in recent years. With the makeup of the legislature the last few years, we've just been lucky we havent lost anything trapping related. With republicans now controlling the House, theres a safety net now so theres a possibility of getting some new things passed without the danger of bad things being amended to a bill

Goldy has it right. I'm not aware of there ever being a vote for extended checks for snares.
Talking to other trappers, success has varied. We did well.
If anyone is motivated to get non resident trapping passed my suggestion is to go to the capitol at least once a week to lobby to get it done. Go to each and every natural resource committee meeting and be prepared to do it for a couple years maybe more.
Spend the day in the woods chasing the elusive partridge. Today's score partridge zero, Steve 1.

Made the son a big breakfast for his birthday (14 today) hopefully he has some birthday fur in the traps and then back to the cabin for the Vikings game we are recording. Going to let the traps cook until 1:00 then start pulling
Good luck everyone!

Weird season I agree, plenty of marten track prior to season, set up on proven spots (8) fresh tracks at all locations.Caught one big adult male first night, since then we saw 5 tracks along the line, but not where the boxes were set out.I have one box out, letting it soak for a couple more hours,it's within 325 yards from my house.I will check and pull a little later on.Saw three coyote tracks this morning 2 where under the leaning poles sets for marten 1 on the main south road.No bobcat tracks today, still in front of them, hope to have one return by Christmas.Have a good rest of the evening everyone.

Notes for next year
own more 220's Make more cubbies If we had a 48 hour check on snares and footholds during cat season I would never set another 220.
I have nothing clever to put here.

Pulled our traps today, all empty ended up 1 marten and 1 fisher both females. Weird season not much sign maybe too much logging in our area. I left some bait out for trail cameras see what we see. Had fun, hope you all did too. Congratulations

Never had as much Cat activity on our land as this last year. Have at least a whole family. Mom and two young still traveling together and a large Tom had is the boldest I’ve ever patrolling within yards of our cabin. Their tracks along our drive work up our plot hound to no end on daily walks. Just can’t see not having them around for what little they are bringing now. Cats around here are usually 30 lbs + but have poor bellies. The increase in cats has really lowered the fisher pop though.
I've learned enough thru the years to now know that I don't know enough. KNOWLEDGE IS FREEDOM.

Same here when the lynx population crashes we get an upswing in fisher. And vice versa. Fisher cant compete with the cats for rabbits in the deep snow.

Took the kid hunting today. Score, Nick 2, Steve 0.
Seen a marten running around about 2 o'clock. Afther this one, I've now officially seen more marten in wandering in the field this year than the rest of the years of my life put together.
