And for snares, I ALWAYS set an even number at every stop.

Always.

Just helps me keep track.

As I’m checking a location I’ll count them out. If I’m stuck at an odd number I know I missed one.

And miss one once, you’ll likely miss it every darn time unless it’s got something!

A good rule of thumb for remembering where your sets are is if you come to a spot that looks like a good place to have a set and it doesnt, you have a problem. If your set is in a spot when youre checking that doesnt say this looks like a good spot to put a set, you also have a problem.

I dont like the idea of flags because they are unnatural in my area but in my area there are fences all over so the animals are used to fence poles so that is what i use. I use the same poles while muskrat trapping as well.

Here is a video of how I use them to find my sets after they get covered in snow.

I rarely mark sets, but when necessary it used to be a natural feature listed on a post it note. Went to the Huntstand app. and can't believe I ever lived without it

I got everything memorized in my head!

Do people really believe putting a flag on the opposite side of the trail works? laugh

Change from Garmin to OnX last year. Both work well, I just like the satellite imagery of OnX better.

I use onX. It’s simple, efficient and no guess work when you can remember.

Yeah. Using something you can see is a dumb idea.

I don't mark mine accept in my head by something on the landscape.
Admittedly, once in a while if I'm checking them in the dark I have to look a little bit to find one. But most of the time I don't have any trouble finding them.

We don't mark anything, older I get probably should.
We have just trapped same property for so long we just know where to look.

But when I do ADC beaver work, I just put a piece of ribbon up.

But put how many traps/ 3 traps 3 ribbons on first or last tree I come to.

Let me sugar coat this

I use an old Garmin tracking collar for my dogs. It has a map chip in it and you can mark way points also. It shows your track in and out so you can mark your routes/trails and add notes. You can zoom in to a few feet or out to miles.

Most places I just remember where they are but sometimes I mark them with OnX with OnX you can also keep track from year to year of what you caught and where so in a way it acts as a journal, I trap a lot of ditches running through open fields and once I have my sets out checking them I just drive down the edge of the ditches from set to set to cover as much ground as I can as quick as I can so after awhile the grass/weeds along the edge often looks the same so then I use surveyors flagging tape.

All river/slough trapping on mostly public lands/waters. Make maps and ID where traps are on the maps. Usually no need to actually plant something there to mark the set. If I'm running a stretch where there is no human conflict I use these. Easy to attach onto something. When looking for them at night a spotlight easily lights them up.

I only mark sets because of sudden lake effect snow in WNY State. Simple 3 or 4 foot branch about as thick as a pencil stuck in the ground 5' directly behind the set with an orange thumbtack pushed into the tip of the branch. Trapping in big woods exclusively, that branch looks perfectly natural. Spent way to much time looking for traps under a foot or two of unexpected snow.

OnX Maps. They even have a trap icon. It's pretty easy to get in the habit of making a set, and marking your spot. You can also put them in files so they can easily be turned on and off, and easy to send in a link if needed. I remember most of my set locations but still use the app because if something unexpected were to happen, I could send the the file with the coordinates to a buddy with the app, and they could check or pull them for me. I also make them for future reference. When I catch a cat, I attach a Pic of the cat then put the gender and size on the notes for that pin point. Then I can easily see where I've caught cats and the typography to help me find new spots. It has also helped me narrow down areas that seem to be nurseries (kittens and females), and areas that seem to be heavy with toms so I can better manage where to set in the furture.

If traps work like the Antis say......I would have no fingers.
