ive been on the hunt for a cage trap that is under 250 dollars that will hold coon and groundhogs. wickencamps and tomahawks caught my eye but are they any good? i am willing to buy more expensive ones but if cheaper ones will hold coons then i would rather go cheaper

Both are fine traps. Comstocks cannot be destroyed. When I first started, I bought a pair of Duke ferral cat traps from a guy off Craigslist. They are still going strong but make sure to add some weight on top or stake them down.

We have been running Safeguard traps for nearly 30 years now. Have caught everything in them that will fit. Very little damage on them from hard use. We run the professional models on most traps . Slide rear bait/release doors are the best ones. Makes tranfers easy and secure.

They have the smaller wire grid 1/2" x 1" which keeps the dirt pull in to a minimum. Those traps with 1" wire grid gets lots of soil and other debris dragged in due to the wire grid size. Plus some animals like coon can grab you while you are carrying your cage out with a catch when using 1" wire grid.

We only use spring loaded doors. No gravity doors. We had a few Wickencamp traps for a short while. We got rid of them all.

You can make up your own mind once you use a few brands in time. Tomahawks are a good quality trap.

Hello Trapper E,
I've only been doing Wildlife Control for 6 years, 57 years a trapper though.
I Have both, the Wickencamp are tough and will last a lifetime, However I too am going all spring loaded doors. I only buy Tomahawk and Comstock now. Pro series!
Have a good day and best of luck to you.

I've had very good luck with the EZ set cages. Picked up a couple at the PA convention a couple years ago. I would recommend them.

Those safeguards make good groundhog traps? I want to get some crazy heavy duty traps for coons cause I have had em chew out of regular cages

Safeguard traps are as good as Tomahawk Traps. We have caught thousands of groundhogs and coon in them over my years doing ADC work.

Everyone has their favorites when it comes to traps.

Comstock 24” double door w/nose cone for hogs. Tomahawk Pro-series with rear bait door for raccoon are my preferences. Just a matter of what you’re comfortable with. No right/wrong answer here.

Really hard to beat the double door Comstock's for hogs. They've made me some easy money. Nosecones are super helpful.
