Kill the does not the bucks.......

The Arizona Game and Fish Department (AZGFD) is asking hunters to continue doing their part to help keep Chronic Wasting Disease (CWD) at bay. CWD is a fatal wildlife disease that affects the nervous system of deer and elk.

All successful deer and elk hunters are encouraged to bring the head of their harvested animal — especially bucks and bulls — to any department office statewide between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. The department is requesting that hunters call in advance before delivering a head for sampling.

The preferred method for storage is to place the head in a heavy-duty plastic trash bag, and keep it cold or frozen until it can be sampled. The department also requests hunters to provide accurate hunter information (name, telephone number), as well as hunt information (hunt number, game management unit in which the animal was harvested, state, and hunting license number). This information is crucial should CWD be detected in a sample.

As an alternative, hunters can view an instructional video on how to collect their own samples on AZGFD’s website (www.azgfd.com

It was mandatory testing here in my zone this year the first 2 days of season. If you had a "trophy" to be mounted the taxidermist could remove the sample for you too. When the young gals finished taking the sample from mine, there was more hair on the meat than there was on the hide.

I have nothing clever to put here.

We have testing here this year. They took the lymph glands behind and underneath the tongue. I took the head to them, they didn't have to see the meat.

So..... why is it happening? Imbreading? Sheep?

Anthrax..?
Or could it be government regulation to make more money?
Just a simple guy asking.......

CWD has been around for years, probably before it was actually discovered in Colorado.
Yes it is different than scrapies.
Seems to be higher prevalence in bucks than doe.
Some doe here have shown an allele that is resistant to the disease.
We've had it around forever it seems and yes we have seen "wasters" deer and elk.
Our deer numbers are down but I don't think cwd can take all the blame.

This is a good documentary on CWD…..No Accident.
https://www.primevideo.com/detail/No-Accident/0MUU0YY01L5I52QAMIA87I6HT1

I’ve had to bring in the samples from the neck behind the jaw bone now for 2 or 3 years.
Money making game? My father-in-law is getting $25 an hour and about 56 cents a klick for picking up the samples and bringing them in to the city. He’s biweekly checks are around $2000. Plus, the giant brand new freezers bought for the drop off zones tend to disappear after the season and the gov has to buy new ones. I sure could use one of those!…..

What a scam. Nothing exists until you start testing for it. In Wisconsin it has become a big cash cow for the dnr and think of the money we are spending on this the number of employees we have added to our bloated government. Chicken Little reaction. Nope I do not buy it.

Lol, it is not a scam.
Just hope your state does not have a large endemic area for cwd.
The sky is not falling but again if this ever crosses like mad cow did hunting will be in peril in the US.

Once you see cwd in animals you know it is real.
