Guys here and the east coast did their thing at night, might have to row miles before making their approach, weather was usually cold and windy....

Tough guys for sure.

My great grandfather was a commercial hunter in NW Minnesota back in the day. They basically did the same thing but at night and the punt guns they used were different. He told me that they would row out into the lake to the rafts of birds out there and float into the middle of them ever so slowly. Then when the time was right they would hit the side of the boat with an oar and when the birds got up they would pull the cords that fired the guns. I have seen some of the old pictures and they were very successful. Grandpa still had a few of them when I was a kid. Always wondered what ever happened to them.
