45 years ago I had no problem catching fox at pee post sets. Coyotes seem to be an entirely different story. I have watched demos at conventions, talked with well known yote trappers, etc. The explanation repeats itself. 8 inches out from the post, either straight out or offset about 2 inches either way. I still miss the majority.

Anyone feel free to add some insight. Yes, the traps are bedded solid.

Can you see where they are stepping? That should tell you where to put the trap. If not, for coyotes I like it out around 10 inches or so. Also, are you using an actual post? I prefer a small, low, subtle backing. Females can squat and strattle it if they want to. Hope this helps you a bit.

No real input but I thought this picture was a good representation. Was a green clump of grass they were peeing on last spring. I used to do some higher pee posts out of wooden stakes back in the day and always put them 9” back and offset from pan. Don’t use them much any more

Keep your smells low to the ground.

That’ll make the animal have to drop his nose to get a good snoot full, the lower his nose the closer his feet will be.

The closer you can get his feet to your smell (a known location), the more real estate you’re eliminating.

Block/guide the rest accordingly.

Thanks guys. Sometimes I use grass clumps. In corn stubble fields I'll use a stub and lean it over a little. I have good urine.

Today's check put some light on the problem. Every set had a feral cat in it. And 2 more in coon boxes. Maybe it's going to be more like getting rid of the possums before catching the coyotes.

I'll keep at it.
