My dad years ago gave me a bag of about 25 Silver Dollars. I have had them for about 40 years still in a homemade cloth bag that the coins were in. I haven't looked at them for years so got them out and seen if any are worth much.

Well, I got one that is an 1889 Carson City Morgan is probably has the most value. If this 1889 was mint, mint shape it would be worth a lot. I attached a link of the most valued SDM coins.

#10 is what I have and haven't looked at all of them yet. Very good shape and all detail is very clean but of course it is a circulated cion. Shucks!!!

No silver dollar owners, wow! I'm not a collector or even an enthusiast of the coin finding hobby.

Back.in the eighties, the Federal government authorized the selling off of silver coins used as bullion. An old man I used to buy coins from told me people bought whole shopping carts of Morgans and Peace Dollars for less than 4 times face. He said it was a zoo with people grabbing up bags as fast they could. I started collecting back when silver coins were 3.5 times face and mostly quit when silver hit $5.40 an ounce. I wish I would have bought much, much more. I used silver coins as collateral to buy farm, when silver was at $38.00 something.

Collector coins are a pain in the butt. I have a buddy who is made of business out of buying that stuff from people.
Like Keith I still remember riding my bicycle in the German American societies parking a lot when gold was released to the public $32 an ounce

I bought a couple of "Morgans" at a local coin shop about a year and half ago to honor the birth year of each of my grandfathers, one for 1884 and one for 1892. The coin shop had an 1892 from the Carson City mint and yes Snowy, it was way above what I wanted to spend (somewhere north of $200) so if you want to cash out on the collector's value (I forget the actual goofy term used), get some estimates on your Carson City one.

I ended up buying just some commons which the store owner sells above spot price of silver plus a "premium" (I think that's what they call it instead of just saying a commission). I like this store owner a lot, he'll pay full spot if you sell him say silver rounds. The premium he charges is what he makes his profit and keeps the store open. His location is in the "old" (first big mall) in "big city" so I suspect his rent is cheaper than the other non-pawn store option coin shop in the newer mall (still almost 50 years old) who will give a person only about 85% of the spot price on silver. That owner is also of a different religious persuasion. I'll say no more.

I like the 1884 one I bought out of the "commons" but I would like to upgrade the 1892 one because it's really worn. But I'm not going to buy a Carson City mint version of it .

I have a few CC in that bag but that 1889 CC if Uncirculated is valued at 1 Million. Wow!!

Always interesting has to where and who had these old coins in their pocket and what they bought with them. Those early years were tough and rough and those coins would have some stories to tell. lol

I won't sell any of them even if the one was worth 1 million. I was given those coins, and they are still in a homemade cloth bag that my dad gave them too me.

My one heir will get them, and he can sell them if he wants.

I also own 1. It is an 1885 and my grandad found it while plowing. Sure would like to know its story.

I got one installed into a money clip but have bever carried it. I've had it for at least 45 years and lays in the draw. I don't want to wear on the coin so never used it as for its purpose.

I have a handful, all circulated, nothing like the sound they make and the feel, ..like real money!

Ohh, the 1921 Morgan, It was the first year since 1904 that they minted Morgan silver dollars. It was also the last year too... They started minting Peace Dollars in 1921 too. The 1921 dollars were all minted from older melted down silver dollars. They melted down over 250 million older dollars in 1921. So your 1921 Morgan dollar has silver from lots of older dollars that were melted down.

Now, if that coin could tell you could write a book. Probably bought a lot of things good and dad. Lol

as far as the value even if you get a rare one its all about the condition. If it has 100 years of wear on it it'll be worth much much less.

When my Dad died my Mom gave me all his coins he had hung on to.
Lots of morgan dollars and other silver coins.
Even some proof sets from 1965 and older.

I found out that at the time (2020) all the silver coins were worth 25x the face value just for silver.
So a morgan was worth $25. All the silver coins were worth more as silver than collector value.
I even had some rare wheat pennies that were very collectable but due to condition I got very little for them.
Best was one for $1. All the other wheat pennies I got .02 ea. So 2x face value, a good deal I thought.
I ended up with approx $6000 when I sold all the silver coins, wheat pennies, war nickels and some other assorted currency.

I don't have many Wheats anymore but all 1981 and earlier pennies go into containers for when it becomes legal in the future to sell them as copper scrap. If that ever happens. Maybe Orange Man will get that law changed during this coming term in office...

If you got 25 times face for silver coins in 2020 you got paid over melt and that could have very well happened right after COVID.

Silver peaked at a hair ovr $30 dollars in 2020. Industry standard is .715 ounces of silver in quarters halves and dimes. Att 30 bucks melt that is 21.45 times face

Silver dollars have more silver, .77 oz silver. 23.10 times face. Silver dollars almost always trade for over face value 25 would have been about right
