Those of you who use quick links what makes you opt for them?

Are they only for certain settings?

I have always attached with j hooks but saw a few reputable guys on YouTube using them.

I probably have over 100 quick links. I use them on just about everything. They are really nice for dropping in a line of pocket and blind sets along a water way using cables.

I have them on a few traps. I can grab the trap and put them on a long chain set or maybe a drag set up. Or I can put the on a disposable stake. It all depends on what farm I am setting on. Quick changes.

I use quick links for all my traps. Even use them on my drags to make a loop around a tree when there’s nothing for the drag to catch ahold of.

I use them to attach drags or to chain off to a tree or clog (log drag). I weld all J hooks because we have large predators. Even if I didn't have them, the fact that most say you are supposed to replace J hooks every time you open them would make me lean towards quick links for the reusability factor. I've never opened and closed J hooks on the line, but it seems to me like taking a wrench or pair of pliers and giving a quick half turn to loosen the quick link, then spinning it open with your fingers and then spinning it back closed when you reattach and giving it a little tighten with wrench or pliers is more convenient than prying open a J hook, then replacing it would be.

A lighter is handy to melt ice out of quick links, but not absolutely necessary.

I use caribeners to attach my marten traps to cable loops on my marten boxes. Very quick and easy, but I wouldn't trust them on footholds.

I use them for lots of things. I have them on most of my conibears, and I attach my footholds to drowning locks with the smaller links

Quick changes when needed. Boss Paul sells them as cheap as you'll find them anywhere, on "The Shed" link at the bottom of the Talk forum.

All good info. Would a leatherman work for tightening and opening or do you need the lineman’s tool.

Leather man will work, most of mine are just snugged and not tightened and never had an issue of any opening.

Yeah it will. I run 1/4" quick links and a 10mm wrench is the right size, but I've use pliers of all types including leatherman at times. You don't need to torque them to a tremendous amount of ft/lbs, just snug them up good. I used to just finger tighten them and didn't think anything could ever spin them loose... then one day I caught a double on wolves and BOTH of them had the quick links attaching the drag unthreaded! One had it opened up enough that I was actually able to take the chain out without turning the nut. After that I have always tightened them beyond finger tight. Even back when I tightened them finger tight, when pulling I often had to use pliers or a wrench to loosen that first 1/8 of a turn, ice, dirt, etc. gets in there and gums it up just enough that cold fingers wouldn't do it.
