That was the year our tech college was shut down for 3 days. We had huge drifts and we had all of our snow trucks and grators for the township, broke down or stuck! They brought in snow machines from the UP and that is when I saw what real snow removal gear looked like. Mail boxes, signs and snow all went through the big augers!

I have old Kodachrome slides somewhere of me out rabbit hunting after that whopper snowstorm. You could walk on top of the hard packed drifts.....right on over fences and whatnot. The rabbit hunting was slow as you'd imagine, but it was like walking down a sidewalk on top of that snow until the weather warmed.

Did some winter under ice beaver trapping and fox hunting then. Snowshoes were essential gear. You could walk right over the top of drifted over fencelines.

1976 was the worst storm I remember in Westside IA

I remember those storms well. Got stuck at a friend's house for three days.

That is when we lost the last of the few wild pheasants we had here in SE Wisconsin (kenosha County)

Married a year and a half . Lived 1/2 mile down a lane. Made makeshift snow shoes to walk to the road. Didn't do any good. Only more snow there.
