Painting footholds white helps prevent freeze ups caused by spring sunshine.

I should have specified the white is so the traps pick up the least amount of heat possible to keep them from melting themselves in, not for blending purposes. The dark traps I use at creek crossings and such is because they're not getting covered, so that is to keep them from sticking out (mostly in case of human traffic)

Snow trapping is a totally different type of trapping.
There's a guy on here that has videos of his line up there.
Might get some good tips from him.

You need to let them air out for a couple weeks after painting, then the smell is gone. Usually you paint in the summer when it is warm, then just hang them out away from contaminating smells until fall. Main thing is don't paint and then put in a tote right away. I've used paint in the past, but bought a powder coat gun from Harbor Freight this year and tried powder coating some. So far I'm really happy with it, seems to hold up much better than paint. But paint works. I've spray painted new traps in the early winter in the shop, then once the paint dried took them outside and hung them for a week or two, then went and set them and caught wolves, before. I've also caught a couple in brand new traps that were untreated. Just took them and boiled them to get all the oil and smells off them and took them and set them. Untreated traps will rust quickly though if you are getting temps above freezing.
