He swapped it out and made a lego car this morning and used the motor in it.

When I was that age I took apart cassette players to get the motors. I'd use a rubber band as a belt to power things made from lego gears.
My parents had rental houses and I'd take apart the stuff people left when they moved out.

If you can find an old cassette player you should give it to him. Just hand him a screwdriver and tell him there's a motor inside he can use to power stuff.
