Does or should it be preserved for formulation?

Depends on how much salt is in it.

Store bought bacon I’d keep a close eye on that grease.

I keep grease off our good “homemade” old style proper salt and smoke cured bacon, years on a shelf with no issue.

Bacon grease can go rancid over time if not considered in a formulation.

What would preserve it besides salt? I have some I saved and froze, i doubt it would last all summer on the shelf, it is frozen.

I haven’t tried it in bacon grease but you might get away with heavy amount of sodium benzoate

I am curious, because even frozen bacon can taint, the salt keeps it from fully freezing sometimes.

Works on bear and coon even if its rancid. Other critters are more fusy.
