Went up to the lake to try some ice fishing with my snowmobile. Waaay too much water on the ice with no snow. Hard to steer a snowmobile without snow when you go out a few miles.
Grouse season still open a few more days. Had 4 in my crab apple tree, except I forgot to bring my shotgun. frown

It's not always about catching fish. That's what people who don't catch fish usually say.

Are you allowed to shoot grouse with a .22? As still as they sit and as close as the northern grouse let you get, it seems like it would work well.

I don't know about MN but that is a no in WI

that is why you never leave home with out a scatter gun , you can shoot everything with them. slugs or shot depending on the target.

Not sure if you can use a 22 in MN. I either use my 20 gauge or 410 at the lake aiming a little over them for a quick, clean kill. Few if any bbs in the body that way too.

You might need new skags on your sled if you haven't changed them in a while. It will help a little bit slick ice is hard to steer on. When it gets like that we would take the 4 wheelers with chains out

Double six inch carbides, some years run a lot of bare ice. Typically people wait too long to change the carbides, been guilty more than once myself. Studs are handy as well.

2 days before this pic we were walking here. Still good ice under the water, but I went around. I’ve gotten wet enough this winter…lol

I am glad I took my house off 2 days ago. I saw this coming and decided it was better to be safe than sorry. The grouse are really hitting the young birch trees right now and I have been seeing 6-12 each day walking the loop here checking my couple cat sets. I may carry the 22 today.

I have nothing clever to put here.

Not sure how much ice you have but it goes bad fast when waters on top.

Lots of people just don't understand that water on top ice can quickly degrade ice. The water is always trying to migrate down threw the ice sheet. Ice like in a drink glass being lighter tries to move up to the top of the water. Of course looking at a lake or river you can't see all that happening. It is happening however and of course water being warmer than ice it breaks down the bonds in the ice crystals.

So any time you have water on top of ice got to be real careful.

So many factors involved.

Mac
