Only thing better than bean soup is bean soup with 15 different kinds of beans.

beef neck bones are also good
great way to start a soup

Black Eye peas on Wednesday , using ham this year but neck bones work well also.

the beef leg bones are also good

Have an Arm Roast for New years eve , probably toss the bone in black eye peas in the morning.

Do you guys grow any of your own dry beans...?

You guys are killing me!
Pork hocks are rare around here almost like pickled pigs feet!
If I do find some , they aren't smoked enough.
Have to add liquid smoke to get any real flavor .

Same with a boiled cabbage dinner, the pork hocks aren't smoked enough.

I have generally not grown pinto because I think they are just too common. I did grow some Jacob's Cattle a year or two, I can't remember why I didn't go forward with that one but maybe I should. I grow cranberry beans but where I got started with them they didn't call them "Vermont" unless you got them from the Vermont Bean company wink

A big ham bone with the cajun 15 bean mix and the corned beef n cabbage are our 2 fav crockpot meals. Miss Susan also makes an exceptional split pea soup with a good ham bone
Any of those meals will hit the spot when it's cold out.

we eat cabbage every week 1-2 heads between the 2 of us
people that think cabbage gives bad gas it doesn't seem to be the case as long as I am not eating sugar , gas doesn't seem to be an issue even eating a pound of cabbage a week or more.

if you corn your own meat you can do the cheapest cut of meat available like a chuck also venison and I am sure pork but would work as well.

you should try perpetual pot
also called forever soup
endless pot

cool that you always have something hot and ready to eat , you add new ingredients right after you eat or before bed.
