We had thousands upon thousands of them and the military was wanting to go to cartridge guns. They sent them back to Springfield Armory, installed a breech block and made 50-70s out of them. Those saw a lot of frontier service. Wagon Box fight, Hayfield fight etc. They were eclipsed by basically the same rifle but newly made in 45-70. That's what Custer's troops carried at the Battle of The Little Bighorn.
