here is a little history on it. it was a quick way to convert muzzle loaders to breach loaders. Some were made like this some converted.

Yah. We did the same thing with our Civil War .,58cal muskets. We had thousands upon thousands of them and the military was wanting to go to cartridge guns.
They sent them back to Springfield Armory, installed a breech block and made 50-70s out of them. Those saw a lot of frontier service. Wagon Box fight, Hayfield fight etc. They were eclipsed by basically the same rifle but newly made in 45-70. That's what Custer's troops carried at the Battle of The Little Bighorn.

There was a one barrel band cavalry carbine made. That may not have been cut down by someone wanting to carry a lighter rifle.
