I recently caught a really nice beaver, I want to make a wall hanger with him. So my plan is tan the hide and tan the tail, then sow the tail back on. I tan hides by salting twice, then a acid pickle, degrees, back to pickle, neutralize, dry and add tanning solution. Can I do that with the tail? Does it need to be descaled? The other half of the tail I was going to make a sheath with or a wallet. Would that side need to be descaled?

Soak, flesh, descale, lime, delime, soften, wash, pickle and tan with a tanning agent of your choice.

Scales are a different structural protein than leather and they'll turn into a brittle crust no matter what you do, so remove them unless you're making something not meant to be flexible, like a hard knife sheath.
