Does anyone use a masonry bit for dirtholes in frozen ground? We had rain and then the ground froze solid, so I think the typical trapping augers are a no go. I’m looking at the 1” to 1.5” bits.

Yup, I used a 1” and then wobbled it a bit for a Miranda-type double mouse hole set. Worked very well in frozen clay.

But you still have to dig out the trap bed. If you can drive a stake in this frozen ground, you can just use your stake to create the lure and scent holes. No need to haul around any extra gear.

Yes, I have been just pounding a stake and wallowing it out. I was just looking for a little larger hole, especially putting bait down the hole. Digging a trap bed is a pain, but I can get that chipped out. Seldom, do you know what brand of bit you have? It looks like 1" run anywhere from about $25 up to $100+.

I’m sorry, it’s been quite a while but I do know I bought it off Amazon.

BTW, drilling a handful of shallow holes will help with chipping out your trap bed.

Thanks. I'm planning to pick one up and give it a try.

I don't make dirt holes, so no experience with that specifically, but a roto hammer with a chipping bit busts frozen material out of equipment tracks effectively, so I'd imagine it would work on the ground too

I didn't want to spend $ on a masonry bit so I found a 1" bit for a brace and cut the top piece off that goes in the brace and ground 3 flat sides on it too fit my drill. I think I paid $.50 for it
They have 2 cutting blades on them and it works great in frozen ground for me
