I have some Ambrette oil from the plant Abelmoschus moschatus, and wonder if it can be compared to ambrette crystals? Or are these two different ingredients that have nothing to do with each other? Have anyone experiences with Ambrette oil from Abelmoschus moschatus?

Ambrette crystals = musk ambrette (sometimes spelled muskambrette) is a synthetic nitromusk. It also occurs naturally in some plants of the bean family. Ambrette oil contains ambrettolide, a macrocyclic musk, and a bunch of other volatile compounds. You can buy chemically pure ambrettolide, too. There's plenty of info on both of these musks on various perfumery forums, regarding their behavior in formulations.

Also check out hexadecanolide (=dihydroambrettolide), a related molecule.

Thanks Tatiana, this was enlightening, and as you wrote, there is plenty to find about it on various perfumery forums. I am going to experiment with the ambrette oil, and see if I get any response from fox, lynx, wolverine and marten.
