Got home about 230 last night and the old girl didn't get up or even raise her head when I walked in. Just looking at her laying down I could see she had lost weight in the last 6 days since I had been home. When she heard me fill the water bowl she got up and walked over with a stiff leg hobble and slow tail wag.. Took them out this morning and when the old girl tried to come in her back end gave out and she went to a sitting position when she tried to walk in the two steps of the porch. I got a soft growl from her when I picked her up and brought her in the house and put her in one of her spots. It was a rushed morning with the boys orthodontist appointments.. Time to start the youngest here goes another 6900. So whan I get home it will be time to evaluate the old girl. Will it be best to put her down or let her go naturally. With here rate of decline since I was home last I am guessing she won't last a week and I'm taking my 7 off so will be home. Though it was going to happen. several months back but she pulled out of if. I do.t see that happening this time.

You surely not talking about your wife ?? Last post I read you were headed home because she was going to ER !!! HOW IS SHE DOING ????
If it's a pet Sorry for the heart ache. They brighten our days and rip out our hearts when they leave us. Na wife is OK just a kidney infection. She thinks it probably due to switching to carnivore diet 6 days ago but who knows. Antibiotics and she will be fine. Swung by and picked them up after the boys orthodontist appointments. she is geting around and seemed to be feeling a little better. I guess the meds they gave her last night started working quickly. ![[Linked Image]](https://trapperman.com/forum/attachments/usergals/2025/01/full-53884-243289-1000001051.jpg) red is big cancer tumor Yellow showing weight loose.

I had a water spaniel that had the same cancerous tumors in the same area some years ago. It was hard, but I waited until her pain seemed to be too much and took her to the vet to be humanely put down. I could never put down a dog I loved myself. I had another water spaniel who had lung cancer and I'd never seen her smoke tobacco. When she was struggling to breathe, I took her to the vet to have her put down. Prior to that I had taken her to the U of MN where her diagnoses was lung cancer.
One day you'll find someone who is obsessed with you. It's probably going to be a dog. But, it is what it is.

I had a dog looks just like that mostly black some sort of German Shepard mix , in 2021 she lost bowel function over gun deer opening weekend and the wife took her in Monday morning while I was driving back. they make great dogs whatever kind of mutt they might be. she will tell you when the time is , it is hard.

I went threw kind of the same thing with my last lab. Got the lump on breast line I think around age 8??. She was in good enough shape. I took her in to a more old school vet. He removed it all said looked really good. No more problems until age 12 and the lump came roaring back. That time she actually licked or chewed it open nasty thing. She was going down hill fast being older. So I made that awful choice that is hard to do. I know it was the right time and right thing to do I put down. Still can make a man cry.

I've been through this dilemma myself. Do I put the animal down or let it go on its own? I came to the realization I was only keeping the animal alive for my benefit and not the well-being of the pet. Letting go is hard, but you have to make the decision one way or the other.

Sorry. I didn’t put my last favorite dog down when I should have. The sight of him in an agonizing death still haunts me. Shame on me.

I've had to put down many of my friends dogs. Most of them were kept alive way too long and the animal had been in agonizing pain. Looks like you've arrived at that time, but only you and your family know for sure. I'm glad your wife will be okay

Tough decision but I’d put her out of her suffering. Had to put two down in 2023, we sat on the floor with them, vet gave the shot and we stayed till they were gone and a bit. (This word is unacceptable on Trapperman) tough to do but they deserve it!

Sorry to hear. When i did mine, it was the hardest trigger i ever pulled. Yes not easy but needed done and that helps with the sting. Even tho we still have my 9 year old border collie and the 11 month old pup the house seems empty. Luckily I was able to melt the red snow and kick fresh over the area and get her taken care of last night so the wife and kids didn't have to see that what they got up. Last memory's are not of that. Empty collars suck no mater the circumstances.

Still have all mine’s collars too. Sorry for you and your family’s pain I left hers on the back door handle so my daughter would see it and know no need to look for her when she was letting the dogs out in the morning. She is up at 5 or so every morning and let's them out. Turned out she hear the shot so knew already. Probably the only animal we have ever had she could not have put down herself and would have had to have taken in. Just another reason it is so great it was time when I am home.

When I put my last (and final one) down I had the vet come right to the house and take care of it while she slept. He offered to do it much, much cheaper "the old fashioned way" but there was no way I could let him do that. Like was already said, "to each their own".

It's nothing to do with money rather I know how lights out and painlessit is with a blow to the head from personal experience. I have no idea if the vets needs just make them not move and if they have pain they can't express. Also it's at home where she is comfortable and it was when it was time. No 2nd guessing if it was to early. But it's my job to take care of her that includes the end. It's not easy and the worst part of have a dog.

Chuckie said when it comes time for Jez , he wants me to bring everything home and do it but I’d rather not. I’ve always felt more comfortable at work doing it. Better light for IV cath placement. Etc. plus it separates it a little bit and for some reason, it just seems more normal to me. Electing for at home euthanasia is difficult in our area. Not a lot of vets provide it. I wouldn’t want to go to someone’s house and do it

My Chesapeakes both hated the vet, and town in general. Would it have been easier to load them up and haul them to the vet? Sure, on us, but way harder on the dogs.

Put two down in 24. Not an easy thing to do.
You loved them enough to feed them the best, make them part of your pack, kept them healthy, and even paid for a big surgery.
Putting a dog down is not wrong at all. I am an advocate of doing it yourself. The animal is in it's environment and with the one it has known as it's pack in the last m moments of it's life. It sucks big time but you are showing love and MERCY to the animal in it's last moments of life. Taking it to the vet and doing it is an option, but the animal dies in a strange place wondering what is going on.
Allowing an animal to suffer is not a good thing. It is selfish and cruel. Especially if they are old and there is no hope for recovery. Those are hard words to hear for some people but they are not dishonest words. The end is gonna come. It is a matter of time. I let it go too long with our last and I still regret that.
My wife said something to me with our last dog. Liza would come up to us and we would sit on our butts. She would curl up between our legs and whimper. My wife thought it was as if she was saying why does this hurt so much? Can you make it better?
Hard choices come with love of an animal. I know if I am suffering and there is no hope, let it end as soon as possible. Let me die amongst my family and at home as quickly as possible. Your animal deserves the same consideration.
You did the right thing PF. The hurt will go away and another puppy will fill the kids lives soon. Nothing takes away the pain better than staring a new chapter with skunky puppy breath.
You set a good example for your sons. Men do the right thing no matter what. They will be sad but when they get older, they will understand and love you more for it.
How many lies will people believe before they realize their own idiocy?

I have zero issues doing a solid for friends and relatives. I have never done the deed for any of my pets. The last two were taken out by the vet. One was an emergency vet visit caused by internal hemorrhaging, so I didn't need to bring him home. The other one was my wife's dog so we had a gal come to the house to put her down. I still don't know how much that cost and still don't care. The dog was not stressed out at all on her way out. If you've had a colonoscopy , you know you have no feeling what so ever, just dark. If you die during, more than likely , you don't know it! So like the MASH song says , death is painless! Just to help you with your pain.

I've put a lot of animals out of their misery over the years,. But I just think now that they can be put to sleep , why not go with that method? Maybe getting older has changed me!

I've put a lot of animals out of their misery over the years,. But I just think now that they can be put to sleep , why not go with that method? Maybe getting older has changed me! Because many times the process for putting to sleep is harder on the dog than the last walk is. Car ride in pain, waiting room, strangers etc……. I don’t have a problem with the vet doing it if the dog is already there getting treatment. But if it’s home and more comfortable I feel I owe it to them to do what’s easiest for them, not easiest for me.
