One of the local TV stations did a 50th anniversary story of the nasty January 1975 blizzard (up here). I made a pretty awesome snow cave in one of our big drifts after the winds died down but it was a bad deal for a lot of people.

I never knew or maybe don't remember how many tornadoes this storm spun off way south of here. It was a big and nasty event!

The bad storm here was the Blizzard of 78. It buried parts of Ohio for over a month. My friend Don's 1 1/2 mile long driveway was blocked for nearly 6 weeks until the military showed up and dug him out with pay loaders.

Keith, are you talking about early 1978?

If so, yeah, I remember the winter of 1977/78 (I think that was the winter). I had a paper route, I think the paper was still an afternoon one (or switched during the two years I had it). It was a cold ... winter, with plenty of snow here as well but nothing like you state for Ohio. Wasn't that the winter where a good chunk of the Chesapeake froze over, at least for a little bit? I think Lake Michigan also froze over most of its area as well.

The Winters of 76/77 and 77/78 were two tough winters in Ohio. They killed almost all of the quail we had. Today, there are only small populations in a few southern counties. Lake Erie froze over so thick that a couple of guys decided to drive across to Canada in an old truck. They removed the doors to make it easier to get out of the truck in case it broke through the ice.

Yes, it was in early 1978. The snow lasted until May. 51 people died from the snow, collapsing their homes. Other people died from getting lost in the snow. There was many millions of dollars in property damage from houses and other buildings collapsing. Some drifts were around 30 feet deep, entirely burying houses. Some people were stuck in their homes for weeks until the military saved them.

I was 7. After around a week, my dad, and other men from my neighborhood made an expedition to the local grocery store in 3 vehicles. It took them most of a day to go 6 miles and back.

I try to keep two weeks or more of animal feed during the Winter, in case we ever have a similar storm.

Omaha NE was the tornado of 1975 and the blizzard of 1976,,,,,, my mom make me walk to school that day,,,, like every other day……
They got snowed in else where……

I had a short cut through yards,,,,,, I remember having to hide behind houses.
Got to Jill Ks house,,,,, her dad had a bar,,,,,, shot of brandy and then rest of the walk.
Good thing parkas and mountain boots were popular…..

In end of March, first few days in April (not exactly sure of date) 1975 sat out a blizzard in western North Dakota in a Ramada Inn off of I-90. At one point all I could see of my 1973 Gran Torino Sport was the top of the antenna. 2 hours later the car was sitting on a bare parking lot. Wind was wicked. Road crews brought several dead people in off the highway in the back of a plow/sand truck. People working at the ramada Inn stayed there for 2 days as they could not get to their homes in town. People were sleeping in the Ramada Inn hallways. When I finally left there all through North Dakota there were places where they were piling dead cows and calves in heaps with a dozer as it was calving season and any born died fast.

I remember a few times in the 50's and 60's along with the last big storm of 77-78 in Ohio , that closed state roads for days and weeks.

I recall the storm in Jan 75. I was at Ellsworth AFB, SD. I never saw drifts so high since then. I've seen more snow, such as in the storm in the UP of MI in 78, but not drifts like those in SD.

77/78 I was working security at Shipingport nuclear plant. The Ohio River froze so thick barge traffic was stopped. After several days things were getting tough as coal fired power plants were running low on coal, lots of which was delivered by barge. One day we heard a very loud noise. The first set of barges was coming downstream. The tug was pushing 5 barges loaded with coal. The first two were completely on top of the ice and the third one was breaking through the ice, starting at about half its length. The tug was throwing a rooster tail as high as its upper deck. The ice must have been two feet thick.

Here in Ohio, the winter of 77-78 was generally very cold and snowy. However, the blizzard was exceptionally bad. The sound of a roaring train woke me a little before 5:00 am. That was odd because there was no railroad line close by. I looked out the window and could not see the light at the barn. That roaring wind was blowing the snow nearly horizontally. Turned on the radio and learned about the blizzard and what was expected to continue. There had been no forecast warning about the blizzard. Where i lived, the raging blizzard continued for nearly 36 hours. We had 36” of snow on the flat. Drifts were as much as 10’. Low spots in country roads drifted bank to bank. Fortunately, that fall i had put up quite a bit of snow fence along the driveway. Most roads were closed for at least a few days. Most businesses were closed for about a week. Schools were closed for two weeks. There was a lot of property damage. There were some deaths related to folks trapped in cars, power outages, lack of heat, and others using unsafe heating methods. It stayed cold so cleanup and removal of the snow took a long time. The huge piles of snow lasted until at least early May.

Remember it well. Our road was plowed with a road grader, with a side blade, to push the snow farther off the road. Snow was so deep that when they plowed our road the snow bank was so high you couldn't see a car coming down the road , looking from our kitchen window. The air pressure was a record low of 23.23 if I remember correctly
