Wow those are tough solutions. Ours can't be over 12 in either. I cut me a 12 in stick and marked 10" for coyote 8" for bobcat.

If theres a max loop limit, marking the cable does nothing for you.

Lugnut, I really think now that I have one in front of me, I can consider making them myself! I just couldn’t wrap my mind around how they actually work.

Baloney! The OP wants to know where the 12” max loop size is and they know the loop size length, so mark the frigin cable at the max loop size!!! The OP isn’t blind so they don’t need to attach something else on the cable to feel so the OP doesn’t set under or over the max OR intended loop size! For goodnesssakes, I snared for all the years MI allowed snaring and I wanted and used a 10” loop so in order to have a 10” loop every time I hung a snare I premarked the cable. When I hung a snare I set the mark at the lock which equalled a 10” loop!!! For goodness sakes, it’s not rocket science! I just reread the OP’s post again and I don’t think I missed the question. They want to know where the 12” loop max is so mark the cable. If you want a 10” loop, mark the cable. Any size loop, 8”, 10”, or 12”, mark the cable and set the mark you want for a loop size at your lock!

It’s the trapper’s responsibility to ensure that their loops meet the Regs and in the OP’s case, not over a 12” loop so mark the cable at the 12” loop size and set then lock on the mark!!

My problem specifically is that the CR is already assembled and I had to figure out how to put a max opening stop on without cutting off the existing bottom stop and swivel and threading a new stop on. But that ended up being the most simple thing to do for me….as I didn’t have extra wire and the split shot idea could prove a problem if they came off.

Oh, so there was some rocket science involved after all. 

I know nothing about snares, but if the goal is just to make it obvious it cannot be opened more than 12 inches, why not just put a wire rope clamp on it as a stop?
