My boys are really getting into all these survival shows on tv and YouTube and have decided they want to snare a snowshoe hare and cook it over the fire.

My question is, is there any concern with the guts freezing in the rabbit and meat being spoiled?

I’m not sure of all the “rules” of spoiled meat when it comes to that.

I've eaten a lot of snared bunnies that were frozen solid when i picked them up. Never had any consequences from that BUT.........they were not cooked over an open fire.

I would suggest that you convince them to make a stew that has reached 212* for a while. Trichinosis is a possibility.

Thanks white!

I convinced them we’ll find a recipe and cook one over the stove/oven.

I feel better now if they only check their snares after school that it’ll still be fine!

Stew made from snowshoe hare is a staple for people wintering in the bush.
Rabbit stew and dumplings is some good eating.
If it is like rubber, you most likely boiled it instead of stewing it.

I've eaten a few, all fried in a skillet. They were TOUGH. Flavor was whatever coating we used.

Just doing what I want now.

I found a recipe online to make a stew out of one. Still need to decide if we’ll make dumplings or bannock to go with it.

Something that started off for the boys to do for themselves has now got the family involved with talking and meal prep lol.

It’s actually quite exciting!

Hares and rabbits taste better if they are not snared or body grip caught.

Well one of the boys caught one, so here we are eating rabbit stew and bannock.

First time making stew and kinda wish I used a different recipe. I wanted it more soupy.

The boys made the snares all on their own, found the trails, and set the snares and checked them every day all on their own as well. They just turned 11 years old.

They are absolute killers with their slingshots! About all we have left to hunt with here laugh

I wish I had pics of the snares on the trails and the catch, but this was their thing and I wasn’t interfering.

The boys were very proud while they, Mom and Dad, and their Sisters all ate their rabbit stew!

We have few around here, any more. The ones we harvested would be cooked up hare and dumplings. Didn’t care for it fried.

Bunny is some good eating. Boiled then fried nice and crispy is hard to beat. One of my friends mom used to do rabbit a couple good ways. One was tossed in shake and bake them deep fried and the other was sort of like dry garlic ribs. Shot rabbits taste way better than snared. Fried rabbit kidney is tasty.
