I have received $3.00 nose count for my put-up southern coon's for the past two seasons. Is there anyone who expects to do better this season? I haven't been keeping up with current prices. Any input would be deeply appreciated. Thanks

They didn't sell very well at the auction in Boone iowa saturday.

I'd be happy with that for southern coon. I don't think you'll do better elsewhere. Hopefully you have a strong market for the carcasses too.

When Trump becomes president and gets everything good with Putin, sanctions lifted, etc we might have a coon market.

1 for the skull .50 for the willy, and render the fat you'll fetch a whole $3

I get that they need to be harvested, but if corn was a nickel a bushel farmers would be growing a different crop lol.

Can’t speak for southern coon, but two years ago I got $3 and last year was $6 for our coon. All nice big December prime and at their best SE Nebraska coon. All green skinned not finished.
I haven’t sold my December coon yet this season but will let you know.
I sure would t even try to finish them at these prices but green skinned it’s at least paying my gas costs while I pursue cats, badger, etc and it’s been fun.

Haven't sold a coyote these past two years for this exact reason. No reason to give them away for pennies.

The last truck buying video I watched a few weeks ago was buying dry finished fur what I was used to selling on the carcass whole for. The guy I saw sell averaged $5 coon a few $3's and a $10. Not great but it wasn't really the less than a $1 price everyone seems to act like either. They didn't look like monster MN sized coon either.

Fur buyer here in Southwest Missouri has posted on his facebook that coon and coyote are NO VALUE. Still going to trap, just to help the turkey and deer. too many nest predators and the coyotes and cats are thick.

dout you will make much difference rockfarmer you may keep a few out of the chicken coop or sweet corn patch protect the nesting birds you better have a really long line and nothing else to do when did you come around clay last i new you was promoting trapping and hosted a fur buyer every year

Joe1 - I am not Clay. He is 2-3 hours north of me. And yes, he still does that event - and everyone who attends says its a great deal.

I am going to hit them hard - and I have a friend trapping across the creek who is going to get after the coyotes and cats as well. Hopefully we do some good.

Get them ALL. Give those nesters a spitting chance come this spring.

However there are more critters other than coon!
Coon are our bread and butter. But it makes no sense to sell them for less than it costs to catch them. If China still wants them they’re going to have to pay more than they want to these days to get any from me.
I was a die hard coon trapper until I could no longer sell them finished for north of a $10 average. If you wanna trap them, that’s great! Get after them. Our Missouri coon aren’t worth marketing. Maybe it’ll work at points north of us, but I doubt it.
I still and always will trap, but these days it’s beaver because I get paid to trap them, otter and bobcats because we have a ton of them and they’re always sellable. Catch rats when the market is good enough.
My son is catching coyotes and selling them into the live market.
Not everyone has the same options, but my example of the farmers not growing corn if it’s a nickel a bushel still stands. They would find a different crop to harvest lol.
And yes, I have an out of state fur buyer at my house for a weekend every March. He pays as good as you will get anywhere and we have a really good time. Around 60 guys sell that weekend and we fry fish and have a blast. Stay up way too late on Saturday night though lol. Getting too old for that !!

That's a great solution...force the one major market we have for coon to use something else. What makes you think the Chinese wouldn't turn to a "different crop" themselves? Btw....farmers would continue to grow corn....subsidies you know. You ever hear of Canada Goose? They went to a different crop and look what happened to the coyote market. Trappers don't have the leverage anymore...and haven't for long time. Throw em in the ditch if you want to..you're accomplishing nothing.

I agree that I’m accomplishing nothing, but it isn’t costing me anything.

Around here it's grapes and not corn. Some of these grape vines are 100 years old. You can't just plant a different crop. When grapes pay zilch, and they have many years, you just plug away and make what comes in until they pay better and sock that money in the bank. A lot like coon

i agree farmers will plant corn and sell it for less than they have in planting it and trappers will do the same and buyers will have a big smile dont know how many times iv heard i just cant throw them in the ditch trappers are special dont know any body that spends more for gas to drive to work tnan they make at their job

If you catch 100 of those $3 coons, that's $300.00 It may cost you $500 to catch them but you minimize your loss to $200 vs. $500 if you sell them. That's why people sell below production costs. They get to do what they want to do, help their ground nesters, etc... Plus many folks don't like to waste any animals if they have any value. I see guys keeping possums and skinning them for $.25 ea because of that.
