When did Ford 'fix" their self ejecting spark plugs? Or the plugs that disassembled themsleves, resulting in head removal to extract them? Seem to remember those being the 2 valve V8's in the early 2000s. One of my aunts had that issue in a 2006 explorer I had it in a newer moving truck too. Seems they still use the 2 valve in the vans, and haven't fixed it. Fixed a few of them, what a nightmare.

I'm not familiar with their issues. my last f 150 was a v6 99 in 2000 it died hiting a red oak at 55mps after an old man pulled out in front of me off a side street on the hay I was on. he clipped me and the impact resulted in me off the road and in that tree. I don't remember bit pieces of the 3 months following that. I have an 01 excursion and 91 f 250 with 7.3s. But spent most of the 2000's in an sr5 Toyota. Best truck I have ever had. Time to go look up Ford problems.

Just find the wife a job...and tell her...shes paying 800.00 per month
For your new truck. That's the least she could do

For your new truck. That's the least she could do I can buy any 2 vehicles I want I'm just cheap and look for value. I would rather buy old and used but reliable and meets the need than new and pretty with payments. Payment money going into investment always seems like a better choice to me than into vehicles loosing 60% or more of its value in 6 years and paying interest on top of that. No I would rather buy old and used paying cash. Don't need to look pretty or be fancy just get the job done.

So what about a 02 Dakota full sixe x cab 4x4 with 94 k miles . some like dodge has some issues I heard about but I'm not a car guy. If it has the 4.7 v8 they’re known to have head gasket issues. The one I had did. A local older mechanic told me they were notorious for that problem

If you really want to save money and still have something that can haul stuff around get a Toyota Sienna Mini Van, get a hitch and small trailer for when you need it. Few Grand will get you a good running/driving rig that will go for 300,000+ miles and can more less haul as much as most of the trucks you're considering. Now I do like mini vans. Lots of room decent mpg and can pull a trailer well enough. But not much for getting around on the farm and getting wood. Like I said I'm cheap and prefer value. Thelast 3 or 4 years it's been a 2wd 97 ranger and before that a 98 Honda accord. neither idea but both filled the need at the time. If I find a good deal on a van especially an and I will buy it if nothing else for my daughter and then my son can take over her s 10.

I have several dodges, but they're all diesel. I'm not a dodge fan, but I am a Cummins fan. For gasoline powered trucks Chevy and Toyota have both been good to me. In today's market it's hard to find a Toyota that's worth what people are asking. I bought mine for like $2k I think, I've been offered $6k for it, and I cannot understand why for the life of me...most every Toyota I've seen (minus the newer ones) is a glorified clapped out beer can on tires, the cabs are small and they're horribly under powered, so I buy Chevy Silverados for light duty trucks now and I've been very happy. My old 94 sr5 Toyota is by far the best truck I have ever had. At the time I didn't know it was not an f 250 and pulled and called more than it ever should have. I'm lucky I didn't kill myself and others. Had to put it in 4 low to get it to started and only max speeds of 40 mph on the flats. LONG time to stop and tough to stear with suspension stretched out and to much weight on the back. Being young and dumb But they are high today so looking at Chevys now. Not finding much that is low miles and older that has rocker panels.

[quote=Shakeyjake]OK so I found an 04 with 5.4 4x4 with 84, 000 miles the small extended cab and to many buttons and leather. It looks very clean from the pictures. Missing gas fill door. Does it have that issue or was that only 05 and later. Asking just under 10 k but it 3 hrs away to go look at. but that low miles and price has me thinking about making the drive tomorrow. My little old 97 ranger needs some tlc and that's taking the dash out to replace vacuum lines so I can get the heat and air to work. It's not fun in bad weather with no defrost blowing .
Edit to add I was using dads Tacoma to cut wood today. I forgot how nice driving a 4x4 is.
04 started with the problem, but not all of then did it. My 06 started at around 120000 miles. A friends truck was fine but he sold it at about 120000 lol. It used to be an expensive fix as the front of the engine has to come apart. There’s a guy around here that would fix it for $600 instead of $2-3000. He got so good and fast at it, it was his specialty…haha. The spark plugs blowing out was supposed to be fixed in 03 I believe.

Auto prices went nuts during Covid and the resulting "supply chain disruptions" and they remain high.
In 2021 one of my work vans reached the end of it's service life, rusted frame, It couldn't be repaired in a way that was cost effective. I needed to replace it in a hurry. New ones could not be found, dealerships jut didn't have them. Used prices were insane. I ended up paying $18,000.00 for a 2014 3/4 ton Chevy Express work van with 87,000 miles.
It was the best deal I could find, took me about to weeks to find it. I told the guy he'd have been lucky to have gotten $15,000.00 for that truck pre-Covid. He agreed. LOL
December 2023 a tree fell on my old 2008 Tundra totaling it. I starting truck shopping right away. My initial plan was to buy new until I found out Toyota had discontinued the 5.7L and all other V-8's. A quick look at the new V-6's was all it took for a hard no.
Used prices were insane, especially on Toyota trucks. It took me almost four months to find a 2018 Tundra with everything I wanted for a somewhat reasonable price. It had 57,000 miles and no rust. I paid $33,000.00 which, believe it or not, was about $2,500 below market value at that time.
Like Paul said, keep looking.
Eh...wot?

Seems like every truck has some type of possible issues regardless of brand. chevy and torque converter new Toyota spending rod bearings, Ford has had a lot of recalls and on it goes. seems like just rolling the dice. Hours of looking and I'm getting burnt out. Yep. They all have their issues. Pick your poison
