So I see some people use a different set of equipment for remakes and some seem to use the same tools for everything from new/first sets to the last remake before they pull

Curious how everyone feels about it

A. Separate tools for remakes and never mix their use

B. Use the same tools for every set with no thought about it

C. In certain situations I use separate set of tools

A brief reasoning would be appreciated with your answer

Wish I could run separate tools but only so much room in the tacoma. I do run a different hammer and gloves for DPs vs footholds

I can only carry so much with me, so I try to keep the tools I use as clean as possible, but I use the same ones for everything

Well back in the early 70’s I learned that fox didn’t give a crap about dirty or clean tools when resetting catch circles, all was good. Come the 80’s and coyotes showed-up, I quickly learned that my coyotes didn’t like catch circles so no more resetting in them meant no more dirty tools or remakes with dirty traps.

I use the same tools, I just carry less of them when resetting. The advantage of using drags or long chains is you dont have to do much construction remaking a set.

I have a setting bag and a remake bag.

Lots less stuff in the remake bag.

Ditto.

It would be nice and may be productive for some to use different tools for a remake. But most of my trapping is done off either a snowmacine or fourwheeler. So space is a commodity and I only pack one set of tools

Same tools. Remakes usually catch more yotes for me. The only rule I have is no bait or lure in my trapping bag, ever.

I don’t have another set of tools other than I swap out the big heavy hammer digger I used for initial set making for a lighter framing hammer to cut down on weight carrying tools when I’m checking.
Other than that it’s all same bag same tools and for remakes just get better and better. I reset every remake, same trap as before. Whole place stinks like the catch so swapping trap made no sense to me u less it was broken or bent beyond reuse.
I do like bait at remakes. I can’t add enough lure or pee to overpower the pee and poo that are already all over the catch circle. But a fresh bait certainly works well for me. To get their focus where I need it.
Doesn’t matter what the catch was either. (Coon, possum, coyote, cat, whatever) I remake all the sets with catches and have had good success on the next coyotes or cat that comes through.

Money cannot buy you happiness, but it can buy you a trapping license and that's pretty close.

Good Morning BT !

Tools always stay separate from attractants.

A canvas tarp and clean gloves are used for all new sets.
The same is used to fix/adjust any set that hasn’t connected.

A kneeling pad and dirty gloves are used for all catch circle remakes and handling coyotes.

The same whisk broom is used on all sets.

Aside from the broom, the only other tools I use on remakes are gloved hands.

Flats have a lot of advantages; so does sand.

Appreciate the replies

I have caught several coyotes in same trap inside catch circles so I don’t think they have the pressure here to have as much avoidance of a catch circles

I believe that transferring a little scent at a fresh set is not a bad thing most of the time

I think there are 2 instances where clean and scent free (as possible since there is never a true scent free anything)
Those would be blind sets and educated coyotes

I will add that if I make a remake in a catch circle that is saturated with urine/droppings or the dirt is wet enough to stick on my sifter and spade I will wash those things off in the pond on the way back to the house to get as much excess off of them as possible

And I do not use same gloves, most times I just put a pair of latex gloves on
Never have used same gloves either for bait/lure or kept bait/lure with my traps/tools etc

I do switch out my 4lb FB "Thors" Hammer for a a masonry hammer. Lot of times I just take the masonry hammer if I know I dont have to deal with heavy clay on set days. Unfortunately most of the ground i set is clay. Its rare that I get to set in heavy organic soil or sand based soils unless its in corn ground

so as a rule i use the same tools the area is already saturated with cover set most times your catching family members in sets unless you find a hwy where intersecting family groups use the same ground as for catch circles always reset that trap but set a new one up just outside as some days coyotes enter circles without regard other days they walk around them have yet to figure out why it may work on one farm but not at the neigbours farm

Yet folks will take scat from one coyote and use it at a different set…isn’t that scent too, lol?
I say do what works for you. If resetting a catch circle doesn’t produce, don’t reset. If using the same tools results in no more catches, then by all means purchase different tools.
I have no way of knowing if certain coyotes avoid my sets or not, other than with cameras.
I still find it funny that people that trap the same areas year after year talk about catching educated coyotes yet they’re the only ones trapping that area. So who’s educating them? I think critters are just like people, you got some dumb ones and some real smart ones. Some sets or scents don’t matter to them, others are just naturally spooked by anything. My question again is how do you know you caught a smart one or stupid one?
And again, if it works, don’t change.
If it doesn’t work, change it up.

I might use a different pair of gloves but that's it.
