I bought a battery for a 2017 Chevy 2500 at the local Napa store 188.00 dollars. Dang that seems high.

You may have noticed that there no longer are core charges. The deal is the battery recycling industry was shut down by the EPA and now instead of recycled battery parts they're all new. New lead, etc.

That's why we're all paying more. Battery shops now have to pay to have old batteries disposed of.

I hadn’t paid any attention to this but it does explain a lot.

I got charged a core charge when I got a new one for the electric fence this year. And the Napa had a stac of old ones by the door last time I was in there I made the assumption they were cores. I guess they could have just been for disposal.

This is totally wrong. I drive semi for a battery manufacturer and we pick up battery cores and the lead gets melted down and made in to new batteries. EPA did not shut down the battery recycling industry.

Just replaced the battery in the vehicle after it left me stranded twice. Got the biggest battery that would fit in the Murano, so not that big; cost me $235.00 with the 10 mm wrench which was twelve bucks. Don't know where all my 10 mm wrenches keep walking off too. I asked the guy at the parts store if the battery was made out of gold or lithium? He laughed, but he did let me use his cart to get the new battery out to my car across the parking lot. Prices are ridiculous and only a three year warrantee. I wasn't charged for a core, as I was bring the old battery back when I finally wrestled out of the engine compartment.

Replaced the battery in my wife jeep trailhawk last summer 500 canadian dollars. I new it was going to be expensive the first time I looked under the hood when the car was new. It's a big one.

My wife just paid almost $300 for a new battery for her Honda van. The repair shop guy only buys American-made AC Delco batteries but said Korean made batteries would be cheaper.

Scrap yards are still buying old batteries but I'm a bit disappointed on the current price at the non-ferrous place I go to, 12 cents a pound, although old batteries were never too high because of all the liquid weight in them. I remember finding about 6 in one place where someone had split from an apartment complex and the management company hired someone to clear out some garages. They had tie just piled up with the other trash so they got liberated by me and recycled properly wink

I think what the EPA has done in the last decade or so, starting with Prez Barry, is to stop all U.S. lead mining and raw lead manufacturing. The melting down of old lead still happens but I doubt that can keep up with demand so much more of the lead needed in standard vehicle batteries is now imported. I'm sure that has driven up the costs but does that explain most of the high prices...?

I remember buying car batteries for $50-60 and installing them myself. I think the last one I did myself I bought from O'Reilly's and it ran north of $150 (with core trade in). That was probably back during Trump I.

It's what I was told at the battery shop I buy from. The scrap yards around here no longer buy batteries...

I suspect that individual states can restrict what scrap yards can buy in their state or make other regulations so burdensome that businesses decided on their own not to buy the material. I heard that the Massachusetts government outlawed the sale of methanol cigarettes a number of years ago. Now there's a supposed black market for them. Go figure...

Bought a pair for my Ford diesel last fall.
At dealership, they're usually close to.Walmart price, and I seem to.have better luck with them.
Think they were $ 160-170 each, after discount.
Everyone still has core charges here.

I replace them at first cold snap, after 5 year mark, stick.old ones in something else, usually get a few more years out of them.
Had one make it a few months short of 10 years.

If you live near one of the Advance Auto parts stores that are closing, check them out.
I bought some stuff for basically 5 or 10cents on the dealer. Unreal deals as they don't want to move anything. Sell it and close.

Bought 2 LiFePo4 batteries during the Black Friday sales, $200 each. Can't be used for car starting though.
