We didn't see the sun in the valley for a month and it stayed below zero with the coldest nights -20 to -35. People were struggling to get theirs cars started. people were using electric blankets, heat lamps, space heaters or whatever to keep the oil warm enough to start their car. It was depressing. The only cool thing was how long all the ice crystals got on all the vegetation - that was very pretty. Luckily I could get in my patrol truck and go 20 or 30 minutes up north or south and get above the inversion. When I got above the clouds it was bright and sunny and got up into the 30s. Driving back home the top of the clouds almost looked like a white ocean. When you dropped into it you could immediatly feel the temperature drop and smell the pollution and wood smoke.

I would not want to live in a place where -30's and below is the norm! This year we've only got a couple skiffs of snow that melted right off. The coldest night so far was probably about 15. It's been a very mild enjoyable winter and I haven't missed moving snow. I just hope we get more in the mountains and some good spring rains.

Why not plug in the block heaters?? Seems easier

Almost every year it gets to at least -60. Keep on eye on North Pole temps you’ll see what I mean.

We live in a valley right next to the Chena River and it is known locally as the coldest spot around Fairbanks. Last year we got down to -65

For modern times last year’s cold snap was significant for duration and intensity. Don’t have to go back too far and it was more common. I’m glad I was at the main cabin and not stuck at the little line shack [Linked Image]

Let me be the first human on the Internet to do this: I stand corrected, please disregard my doubts. I know -70 occurs with windchill fairly easily, but I've never seen it on a thermometer. That said I know what it feels like I think, I'm that idiot who sees the truck is saying -50 and decides to stick his hand out the window going 60 just to check lol

It’s been a while since a good old Fairbanks -60 3 week long cold snap! Ice fog so bad that you can’t see 100 feet.

If your going to trap here you got to be tough!

I love the smell of burning spruce---I love the sound of a spring time goose---I love the feel of 40 below---from my trapline I will never go!

y'all are tough I have only experienced down to negative 10 or so does not get in the negative very often here and never long. Was 4° yesterday morning and in mid 20s this morning. Got warmer started melting the snow and making mud. After geting the rest of the wood we got cut up to the house in the morning I'm going to have to go stomp some brush for the boys before the snow is gone. Should be good for a rabbit or two.

The cold snap usually hits here about the end of January or the beginning of February.

It’s not good for walking a trapline, but it usually means that the animals will be hungry. So there is a better chance of them going after bait.

It’s a good time to catch up on indoor projects. No matter how cold it is I make a point of getting outside for at least a couple hours. Pretty cool to see a grouse puffed up almost big as a basketball in those temps.

We hit -70 last winter here in the Northern Yukon Flats last winter but in the 90s i remember-72. Last winter in my wife’s hometown 40 miles south it hit -74. I went out in my trapline at -50 last season and when I made it home late that night it was -66. When it hits -60 here the open parts of our river kicks out this hanging ice fog that turns the dry cold to a dangerously high RH cold. A cousin of mine last winter east of here almost didn't make it home that same night I was out at -66. His winter gear became saturated from that ice fog and they had to peel his frozen gear off. Be careful out there ya’ll

-58 and a very light breeze north of Thompson. The bucket & digger truck just sit, gotta use the spurs. The trick is to freeze your fingers up to the knuckles but don’t climb down to warm up. Stop and clap/swing your arms around until they start to thaw, then after that incredible pain comes that you can feel in your heart. But once they’re thawed, you’re good all day. If you go in to eat lunch, you start the freezing process over again. The guys today stop and go down every 5 or 10 minutes and nothing gets done. In a power outage, it’s gotta get done, can’t wait till it warms up, that’s when us “old” dummies get the call…lol

We rarely get to zero here on the coast, but a few years ago we had a cold snap of below zero a couple days... Dumb us sat in a semi open pallet blind with 20 plus mph winds hunting geese...-4 on the thermometer, no idea of the windchill, sat there 4 hours, went to lunch and dumb as we are ,went back another couple hours.... never saw a goose.

January 27,1989 the official low at the NOAA station downtown recorded minus 75.
The NOAA substation across the road from me recorded minus 82.

One guy tried to "fix the filter' on his fuel tank outside and got his gloves saturated with #1 heating fuel. Lost all his fingers.
There was one vehicle in town that was used to take people to the store and clinic. An old diesel van. It ran non-stop for ten days.

Some people who heat with oil had to move in with people who heat with wood because the oil would not flow at that temperature.

The town even had tee shirts made to commemorate that date.

The warmest it got during that ten day stretch was minus 67.

There was no wind during this time. Most of you who experience these cooler temperatures regularly, know that usually when it is this cold it is also super calm.

No waiting to try to get power back on. You just got it done!! I remember numerous times we would go up in pairs with spurs on to get the job done. One would work as long as he could till he couldn't feel his fingers than the other would finish up.
I still wouldn't not have traded those years for anything or any other job on earth.

Stay safe Brother!!
