Be their parent...NOT their friend.

The trick is to raise children right, while they are still young and impressionable.

I know 2 brothers a year apart in age, one is a hardworking, easy going, good kid. His 1 yar younger brother, well he isn't.

Actions have consequences and accountabilities

Both parents need to be consistent.

In this case I’m the teenager. But I have a good relationship with both my parents.

I agree with Bruce T. My wife and I raised two sons. We insisted on manners and morals. They had rules and knew to obey them. We never had to discipline them much because they knew what we demanded. They tried to split us one time. My wife made sure that they never tried that again. She was only 5'1" but there was a lot of dynamite in that little package.

I told them once that "this is not a democracy. It's benevolent dictatorship and I'm the benevolent dictator." We raised two good sons. Never had to bail them out of jail. Both were US Marines. One is a homicide detective in Phoenix, AZ. The other is an IT guy in California. He has survived several company buyouts while people above him were shown the door. He's pushing up towards 200K a year now. He must have shown his value to the company.

We dealt with it before they became teenagers, much easier that way.

My parents did the same thing. I didn’t like while it was happening, but now I look back and I appreciate what they have done for me.

Tried dealing with it when they were younger they actually ran pretty straight and narrow back when it was just me and my boys. There mom came back after years of being absent. She was a spoiler now we are wrapping what was sewn there unfortunately. Not to mention my own meddling mother trying to tell them there feelings are more important than everything. Now I'm trying to carve men outta these boys

Be their parent and their BEST friend
Teach them right from wrong from the beginning
Teach them that all actions have consequences
Take them to church and Sunday school
Have them do weekly chores to teach about work
Have dinner (or whatever meal your work schedule allows)with them every day
Take them OUTDOORS and participate in those activities with them
And above all take the time to listen to them as they listened to you growing up
Love and understanding grows with time spent with them and lessons learned.

I raised three girls. The struggle was real. They are all adults now and doing quite well.
