That is pretty good. I remember as a young guy hunt snow hare and they were so plentiful. Now don't see to many but have cottontails and a lot of them.
Give me a fish, I will eat for a day. Teach me to fish, I will eat for a lifetime

We used to have (white-tailed) jackrabbits around here but few and seldom nowadays. Our land grant university's teams are called the "Jackrabbits."
It is a hare, with dark, strong (I think) meat compared to a cottontail rabbit with "white meat." We used to shoot the jacks in various ways, including center-fire rifles. I ate a few of them but it was a struggle compared to say pheasant or cottontail. I guess I wasn't hungry enough at that point to really enjoy those prairie hares.

They cycled down after about 1983 around here and have never made a comeback. I think I've seen maybe less than 5 in my county in the last 20 years.

"And God said, Let us make man in our image and let them have dominion and all the creatures that move along the ground".
 Genesis 1:26

Back in the late sixties there were a few "jacks" around this part of Wis. I shot a couple and you are correct, they are not good table fare compared to cottontail. Nowadays it's only cottontails except some of the big forested areas have snowshoes.

In the book "Watership Down" that could be The Black Rabbit of Inlé, also known as Inlé-rah ("Prince/Chief of the Moon" or "Prince/Chief of the Dead).
