With all the dead ash trees, and I keep gaining on people wanting me to take them, I was wondering if anyone has tried them for dimensional lumber?

It's beautiful cabinet/furniture lumber.

It is and it is about like trying to drive a nail in concrete once it is dry.

I have nothing clever to put here.

I do plan on using it for that also it’s just there’s such a glutton of it now that I don’t how much I can utilize for that and I hate to burn a bunch if it can be used.

Makes good firewood too, I wouldn't feel too guilty about burning it.

It's a hard wood, so there's many uses for it!

Seems around my area, they grow to about 8-12 inches across before the emerald ash borer kills them.
Couple 2.4 s are possible plus if you're ambitious , the cut offs can be turned into chunk charcoal.

I was planning on use my husqvarna as a mill but the number of trees I’m beginning to wonder about just buying a mill, here there’s a lot of trees that are at the 24 inch mark as it really only hit here hard about a year ago.

I love burning it, it just seems to be wasteful to burn that amount, but I know sometimes it’s just best to burn.

I think you'll have splitting problems with dimensional ash, it likes to Crack and split.

It would have to be more valuable than using it as firewood, one would think. Pretty rot resistant too.

Look for someone local who has one and works to cheap. I bought mine and it just sits because some of the local guys will cut for .50 a bf.

I think they use ash to make baseball bats. I've got enough on our property to keep Louisville Slugger in business for quite a while.

If you want more ash trees, Bob, come on over; I can fix you up.

If the ash is still green, you can drive a nail in it. Once dry, it's easier to just pre drill your holes. Our house and barns are all framed with oak and chestnut. We have to drill a hole for every nail or screw we put in.

Slab out the big stuff Bob and use the rest for firewood. That's what I've been doing, probably on a much smaller scale that your talking about though. I pay to have the big stuff milled into 10/4 live edge slabs and some into 8 x 8's for future table leg turnings. The smaller diameter stuff I burn.

I should have enough ash to last me the rest of my woodworking days.

Eh...wot?

Yeah CTRAPs I’ve had more people say take the wood than I can get to right now it’s just nuts, around here there’s not too many that mill anymore the old guy we used got old and so has his mill it’s a circular blade type that can do 40 inch logs, it’s seeming like the consensus so far is to use it for slab or finish type lumber.
