Got 13 hearty Birds...low combs...just went through the first molt ...and have been laying for

The last couple weeks. Getting 6-10 per day. Got a light coming on at 2am and off at 8 am.

The south facing windows provide natural daylight.

Just finished up feeding them suet cracklings...and getting a bag of sunflower seeds

That I soak in bacon grease ...to give them in the cold.

I've got fifteen birds but five of them are older an no longer laying. The granddaughter and I have been meaning to butcher them but haven't gotten around to it yet.

Out of the nine young birds we are getting 6-7 eggs a day.

It hasn't been as cold as some of you more northern guys but it's been low single digits overnight and teens for highs.

They get sixteen hours of light a day.

They always have food but keeping the water liquid can be a challenge. The heater base only works down to about 10 above. After that the water fount freezes up. It gets brought in every morning and set on the wood stove to thaw and warm up. Them it gets refilled and set back in the coop on the heater base. It gets checked in the evening when we gather eggs too.

Eh...wot?

Lugnut try round metal oil pan set on the heat base. You could cover part of the top to help hold in heat and wrap the sides to insulate it. I have no idea what you are using but fount sounds like something with a nozzle, and that is always where it freezes.

MJM, I'm using one of these but an old one from back when they used good steel and heavy galvanizing. The new ones (like the one in the picture) are crap and rust out every few years.

I built a little 3 sided shelter for mine, and that helps down to about -5. After that, I bring the font in at night, and set it back out in the morning with warm water in it. It's still mostly open if the temps are -15 or warmer. Colder than that and I rotate in a new font in the early afternoon.

And yeah, the new ones just don't last.

I gave up on those waters. They are not cheap and don't last any more. I am using a soft rubber feed tub now. It has to get real cold for water to freeze in my coop. It was -30 the other morning for a low and the water was not froze. Deep litter is a plus for keeping water open and a coop warm.

Yeah, the new waterers are not cheap and they are junk, they rust through quick.

My wife got lucky and found an antique pair of Red Band waterers from the 40's or 50's. They are much heavier steel than the new ones and have a much heavier galvanization on them. We've had them for many years. They will probably outlast us. Probably would've gone through five or six of the new ones in that time.

So do you heat your feed tube? Not sure how that works.

I have no light or heat of any kind in the coop other then what the chickens and deep litter put off. 30 below and a rubber feed tub of water does not have any ice on it. It sits on the floor which is litter. I had 9 eggs his morning. Should have more this evening. We feed and collect eggs twice a day.

That incredible. All that insulation must be doing it's job keeping the heat from the chickens and litter in. I guess the south-facing windows warm it up in there on a sunny day too.

Lugnut If it is cold the glass door and windows have a thick layer of frost on the inside. I am talking real heavy frost. I always scrub off what I can with my glove on the door or when it warms up the door freezes shut. The frost melt and when the water runs down it puddles under the door and freezes. The door has a gap all the way around and it frosts the gap shut. I can tell my house shut frost too. At about 10 below it frosts shut and as long as it stays cold it stays frosted shut. When it warm up like it did today, it melts out and the house is more drafty.

The frost inside is probably from the higher humidity from the chicken's crap and breath.

I'm glad I don't have to deal with temperatures that cold. We are having a cold snap now, currently -1, but that is unusual for this area. It's not uncommon get down into the low-teens/single digits around here but negative numbers don't happen that often and then it's only negative single digits usually.

Negative 13 is the coldest I can remember and that was many years ago.

We've been having below normal temps for a couple of weeks now. There is a small, awning style window in my shower. We crack it open to keep the bath from steaming up. It's been frosted shut for weeks. I guess the upside is, like you said, it's sealed up better right now.

The humidity in the coop is much higher then outside. Right now I show 17% humidity. I would say that is about average. It shows it cooling off all day today. I read 23 now and the sun should be up in a hour. It shows 12 degrees at noon and dropping to 2 tonight.

Run a Red heat lamp suspended over a Rubber or metal oil pan sitting on pavers. No frozen water, pour it out daily . couple drops bleach and brushed with a toilet brush a cpl times a week.
