I need some muskrat lure that smells REALLY strong to get the muskrats out from under the ice. There are holes where they get out from under the ice. Its -7 degrees farenheit here.

I trap. It's legal. Get over it.

One of the best lures I ever used for muskrat is cheap spearmint toothpaste from the dollar store. Its only a dollar and comes in a tube for easy application. Worked as good or better than commercial lures.

If they are coming out from under the ice,. You don't need lure.

I've Never used Lure for Muskrat myself. For what purpose? LOL. Set every available spot a Muskrat can place a foot! Over-saturate that area. You'll catch a bunch of "Rats" for the 1st night. Then a few the next night and then Nearly Nothing the 3rd or 4th night......That's when you Pick everything Up and move it 50 yards (or however far). Bam, do it again, and again, and again. Saturate traps in area. Slam the "Rats", Move to next active area. 3 days, move, 3 days move! I barely seldom trap Muskrats in early "Open" water anymore. I wait until I can Safely Walk on the ice and trap them then. Pelts waaay Prime, and it's SO EASY to just walk up-n-down the ice and NOT have to Slog/Wade through the Sticky-Sucky Mud.

Keep it simple. Chunk of white potato skewered on the triggers of a submerged body grip. Anything dead above the ice is a possible meal before you get back to check.

Muskrat makes some good points. But if you try and lay a BG over the hole, make sure you lay It on some sticks otherwise it will freeze down. And you should weight it down so a double sprung trap would be a better choice.
