Got dog license renewal in mail yesterday.
I understand very well why they license pets.. ie. Cats and dogs..
I know it's for the tracking of rabies vaccinations. That vaccination is a legitimate concern with true public health concerns. I understand and I'm good with that don't mind doing it. I also understand that charging for said license is and administration fee. Someones has to issue the license track the paperwork. See that all is good I get it.
Where I get my nose out of joint with the license.

Spay or neutered pet $12.00
Unaltered pet $23.00

Okay why is that??? Why unaltered more than altered?
In this day and age when everyone wants to just pay their fair share. What service or what extra rabies tracking does it take for my unaltered pet? I know people tell me you're making a mountain out of a mole hill. It's only $10.00. Right! but for what?
It's not like a license where I might be paying for say, number of wheels on the road.
They say it's to encourage people to spay or neuter pets.. Who are They to say my pets need fixing? Why does that effect them if they are or aren't??

So there is my annual rant about pet license.
Needs to be one price for all.

What is the program in other areas?

Mac

I've never heard of a "pet license".

It's just another tax in my opinion. Never lived in a place that requires them and don't think I ever would. Sounds like a state with to many democrats that hate freedom. I would .never live in a place with HOA either.

it's just another way they try to get people to fix their pets charging more for those that are not.

No license here. I get my animals rabies vaccines though. I think its the responsible thing to do. I'm not sure how licensing gets more animals vaccinated. The guy who doesn't do it likely wont pay a pet tax either. How can that even be enforced?

I'm supposed to license my dogs. The renewal comes with my property tax bill. I laugh as I toss it in the recycle bin.

30 years of owning bird dogs and I never have, and never will, pay for a "license".

We have dog licensing here, with a similar fee structure...haven't bothered getting one in 45 years...
The only way they snag you is if you rescue a dog from the shelter, or you volunteer to apply and they send you an annual bill....not doing it...

At least here in my county if you don't ever take your pet to a vet for rabies vaccine. Unless someone complains or your pet bites someone. People wouldn't know if they were licensed or not.
I do know unless things have changed recently. The county has someone that goes threw vet records matches them to licenses. So say you took your dog to the vet for rabies shot. Which here only counts if done by vet can't do it your self. It would show that when they matched things up your pet was unlicensed. Vet don't have anything to do with license or no license when they give rabies vac.
Why do I know this. I used to do some diving with the guy who checked those records. He actually worked with county mosquito control and in winter weather months ran threw dog license.

The rabies vaccine is the most important vaccine you can give your dog or cat. I believe in this state that is a requirement of dog and cat owners.
The vet I use is what I think of now days as an old school vet. I think most people here on trapperman would like this guy. He flat out told me rabies is legitimate deal very important vaccine. I believe the man.

My complaint is that there should be no difference in the price of the license. The county or city provides no more services for one pet that another. Whether dog / cat or spay /neuter same service.

Mac

You're telling me the vet openly makes your pet's medical records available to the government? That's ridiculous! Furthermore, the county is paying someone to cross reference vet records to local pet licenses? What an unbelievable waste of time and money.

All the reason to not get the license in the first place.

$20 per dog here and they have to be contained or can't run loose.
Nothing for cat's. No license and they can go as they please killing birds, rabbits etc.
Drives me nuts

Mac if they get rid of the price difference, they will probably raise it above the $23 before they charge you the same for all the pets, fixed or not. They sure as heck won't change it to the cheaper price for all them.

In Ohio, they can fine you up to $250.00 for each unregistered dog over 12 weeks old, plus charge you court costs. If you don't buy the dog tags by January 31st, they charge you twice the normal fee, which varies by county. Dog wardens can inspect any dogs they see for dog tags.

Here in my county of PA it used to be $8.00 for spayed/neutered dogs and $12.00 for those that were not.

It was changed, as of February 1st last year all dogs are $8.70. Seniors pay $6.70.

Lifetime dog licenses are available; $52.70 or $36.70 if your a senior.

I don't think it has anything to do with rabies shots, it is simply another way for the county to generate revenue.

Eh...wot?

You have "dog wardens"? Unbelievable.

We even get the wifes outside cats rabies. Have a gotten few neighbor cats neutered as well. Vet gives em the shot. I dont take neighbor cats in for updates just got enough cats running loose. No one has ever said anything about hauling their cat in to be fixed but I dont tell em either. Folks dump cats here in town pretty regular. Those ones usually end up in my trash can. I dont think you can buy rabies vaccine and give it yourself anymore. Used to buy an 8 dose vial from nitelite when I had hounds. Never seen OTC feline vaccine. Dont know if its the same or not.

Far as I know WI requires dogs to be vaccinated for rabies. Does not require cats be vaccinated but recommends it.
I don't know how they do that or try to enforce it in every county, don't really care. When I go to city hall to renew pet license it is far as I know actually a county license. I was told many years ago the license was for enforcing and tracking rabies vac. Can't get license without current rabies vac.
I don't know if rabies vaccine is required to licenses a cat? I haven't had cat since was a kid. It had no license and no shots of any kind.
I don't know that vet records are covered by HIPAA

We have dog catchers here too, or whatever they're called now, they only respond to complaints of loose dogs, maybe, hardly any loose dogs here anymore so not sure what the heck they do...
Only time lately heard mention of them is when some hoarder gets busted and the animals need rounding up...
