Anyone have experience with reverse shoulder replacement. I'm scheduled to have this done due to a rotator cuff that is torn beyond repair plus arthritus in the joint.

I went to a seminar with a shoulder surgeon and others of his team last night at our local hospital. The reverse replacement sounded like a better option because it wants to hold together. He also said have a person that does a lot of shoulders, not just any orthopedic surgeon.

I had a consultation with a shoulder guy... in a nut shell he said you never gain full mobility, you're limited to how much weight you can lift, especially with a reverse, no recoil from guns, and you'll probably be pain free...probably., also said any problems that develop, the revision surgery is a crapshoot....
My BIL does these operations in Minnesota, he advised not to do it unless you can't stand the pain anymore. Said the operation is extensive, with more risk then hips and knees, and the rehab is long.

I have bilateral hips and knees, no problems there, but shoulder replacements kinda scare me. I suffer with bone on bone shoulders daily, I get a steroid shot every 3 months which helps a little, but not considering the surgery .... now everyone is different and probably the majority of surgeries are successful enough, so you have to make that decision for yourself...and yes, find the best shoulder guy you can....

Had my done 3 years ago. Best thing that I've done. BUT! there will be some restrictions for lifting I have 90% movability with it. But one thing I still do to keep it strong is I still do my P.T. stretches and strength moves about every other day. I waited 22 years to have it done.
Follow ALL the doctors orders and physical therapy and it'll be good. I know guys are terrible about following orders.

Had both shoulders done in 2007 just the balls. Don't know what the term reverse means. On mine, don't know about everyone elses, they cut a muscle. NO repairs there I don't have a lot of control overhead. Not really much of a problem. I've a little pain problem now if I sleep on my side but its been 17 years. I'm sure there have been many surgical improvements since then.
Good luck

Had both mine completely replaced. Both joints done reversed. Went for years where I could not raise either arm much above my belt loops. Have maybe 90% movement now. Not a lot of overhead strength but, no pain. Still do my range and motion exercises three times a week.

I have a few friends who have had replacements on one or both shoulders. They seem to be happy with the outcome. I think recovery time may be shorter than rotator surgery (of which I have had five in 25 years).

I had a total reverse shoulder replacement 6/22. I had 2 detached muscles and 1 partially torn muscle that had to be reattached and repaired at the same time. The surgery was a piece of cake, the PT was extensive but mandatory and really no big deal. Shoulder turned out fine and as long as you realize you will forever have to be careful and follow the doctors restrictions you should be happy with the results. I still have muscle pain but it is getting better with time.

Thanks for the replies. I'm 73 and still working and hope to be able to continue. I'm hoping I can still hunt, may have to get smaller guns.

At the 4 month mark I was told the "healing" was complete and even though that put me into mid October I was still to muscle sore to site in my hunting rifle and to be honest I was very worried about falling while walking in the woods. I pretty much heater hunted that fall and by the next fall I was shooting my 30-06, walking almost anywhere I wanted too and ended the season with my PB buck. 14PT, 223#. So concentrate on the PT and my bet is you will do fine.

Look into a "mercury recoil suppresser" for installation in your rifle stock. I had one installed in my .338 and it cut the recoil about in half. I also had a better custom pad installed at the same time.

Personally I have not done any fleshing since my surgery but I bet I could if I paced myself.
