Yes, in foreground, looks like a rose-breasted grosbeak. In background, looks more like an evening grosbeak.

We had an invasion of immature Harris sparrows this fall, had me scratching my head because there was not one adult around. Tray or anyone, can you explain that? Around here normally get a few adults during migration.

Fall plumage adult Harris Sparrows and juvenile birds are tough to tell apart in fall. The adults look nothing like they do in spring breeding plumage.

I tried the Audubon ID method on one of those one time. Powder was a bit to heavy. I raked up the remnants, but as to a positive ID? No avail...
That's why we tend to just call them LBJs.

4 more weeks and it will be quite a striking bird, very narrow migration range through the center of NA...Harris Sparrow
