This is probably a stupid question but how much wax dirt do you use when making a set. Do you replace all the natural dirt and cover the trap or just sprinkle some in the hole like you do with antifreeze.

I use it to bed and cover my trap. You dont want the levers to frerze down so put some in the bed and cover to protect the top of the set from freezing.

Like Terrence said, put it below and above the trap. Bed it solid then use some of the top dirt you removed to put on top to blend it in.

Yeah and just be careful how much of the native dirt you put on.

In Pa this time of year I pretty much assume what goes on top will freeze in a shell.

Yea it's the same here in VA. I've been struggling keeping the traps from freezing. Been using antifreeze but it only last few days. I bought some waxed dirt to try. If it works, I'll make me some this summer.

Hay sets are a good option.

Buying it you will be tempted to be sparing with it. Don't be. Dig out your trap bed a little deeper and bigger than normal and fill in with waxed dirt, and then bed your trap in the waxed dirt. Taking extra care to make sure the levers and the outside of the jaws are completely encased in waxed dirt, you want no part of the trap touching native soil. Then cover in waxed dirt and Lightly blend, as others said, your blending material will likely freeze, so make sure you put a thin enough covering of blending material that even if frozen it won't impede trap operation or create a thick enough she'll for animals to walk on without setting off the trap.

ExactlyTHIS! Scrimping on waxed sand/dirt I liken to cutting your nose off to spite your face!

This is awesome and I wish I had someone tell me this at the beginning of the season. The jaws were what got me.

After covering with waxed dirt/sand, take a whisk broom and brush a little of the surrounding on top to blend. Also, when Ive been running low on my waxed sand, i sprayed propylene glycol/water in the trap bed before covering in waxed sand to make it go farther.
