My son came with me to the hunting property today. He wanted to shoot some pack rats. We covered about 4 acres in an hour and a half, roughing up the middens with a shovel.

They build their middens either at the base of trees, or up in trees like this

I ddin't keep count, but I'd guess we worked about 20-25 middens. About half the time we'd find a pack rat. They usually run up the tree. If the midden is on the ground, they may run to another midden. Up the tree is best for us, because then we walk around the tree until we get a clear shot.

It makes for a fun afternoon with a suppressed 22 pistol. They've chewed the tractor wiring twice and my tacoma once. So thinning out them out is always on the agenda.

boy I ain't done that in yrs. when I was a kid we had a pack of terriers an would cut hedge poking sticks an attack those huts if they went low the dogs did work if they went high an the tree was small enough give it a good shake an nock the rats out. rats in trees to big to shake we would give a 22. pill. awesome times!

Yeah, we have fun with it. In the day, we like a 22 pistol and run them up the trees. At night they sit on top of their middens and think we can't see them. In the dark we can walk up to within 20-30 yards of them without them moving. So a thermal scope on a 22 is great at night.

I've had a lot of fun bringing people down there at night.

Those rats love soy wiring harness. They can cause a lot of damage to a vehicle.

My great grandad had a feist that absolutely hated rats. I would take her in the woods when I was little and roam until we found a pile of sticks (didn't know it was called a midden but knew it was a rat's house laugh ) and then I would start pulling it apart piece by piece until we flushed the rat and most times the dog would have it as quick as I saw it.

I have watched some videos where they take a pack of dogs into a chicken house or barn and the action heats up pretty quick

looks like fun. Save them for predator bait?

Dawn dish soap mixed with water sprayed all over those wires will supposedly deter them. Idk if it works though.

When we bring our beagle, she loves killing the rats. If I call her and start talking in a deliberate tone telling her where to go she knows the game. I'll shuffle through a pile of lumber of lumber with her standing guard waiitng for the rats.

One time she was thrashing a pack rat in her mouth and it bit her on the cheek. She yelped and wimpered and bled quite a bit but never let go.

I probably ought to. That's a good idea. The only trapping I do is for ADC on this property, so I don't need much.

Do you ever find anything interesting in the middens?

I've had good luck with this product.. Its dried blood. Mix it with water so its like thin blood and spray it on. But use what you mix because after some time it will smell every bit as bad as you imagine it will.

I think this one works too, but I don't have as much history with it so I'm not sure how well it works.

I didn't see much today, just some aluminum cans, and pieces of marking tape we use to mark trees we've planted. Bits of plastic trash.
I've had them steal short plastic tree tubes (just a few inches long, for mice) and bring them back to the middens.
What's most irritating inside the middens is the lack of bark. They strip bark off the trees, especially inside the middens.

When the tractor broke down last year it was outside for a few days waiting on parts. A pack rat hitched a ride back to the garage when I got the tractor back in. I didn't realize it was in the garage at first, and then it took some time to get it trapped. I had panels off the tractor trying to find where the rat was staying. While the tractor was apart, a thumb screw that held a panel on disappeared. I was certain the pack rat stole it. A few months later I came across a bucket (inside the garage) where it had been stashing everything it stole. Here's what was in the bucket:

The black thumb screw is just below right-most of the 3 green bait blocks.

Look at all the bait blocks. Just goes to show that if they have other sources of food they won’t eat the bait blocks.

What's their purpose in taking items made out of metal? The bait blocks and corn make sense, but a lot of what they take seems to be of no use to them. I bet a lot of people have been blamed for stealing small items that pack rats took.

When I was a kid, I read about pack rats putting gold nuggets they found in their middens.
