Was it ever decided on here what size round body grip would be legal for trail use in Wisconsin.I remember seeing a discussion on here but never saw the conclusion.

I can't answer your question for WI but I will say that I fell in love with the RBG's! A person might want to modify their supports/stabilizers though.

Is there a trick to setting round BG................bought a 220 few years back....but it was too much trouble and dangerous for me personally......I intended to use in broken field tile on groundhog ........

Not a trapper, cage trap racoon skunk groundhog in barn, those who are insulting, go annoy others, if you have humorous comment fine, only fresh stuff

IMHO, there’s no trick to setting them, I just open the spring and use a setter. I’ve heard some trapper think it’s easier to set with the spring folded in. I’d guess if someone was trying to set a RBG with only their hands it’d look like a monkey trying to have sex with a football!

I’ve used 440’s, 330’s, 220,’s & 160’s and they all set the same!

You can use a 160 in trail sets in Wi. I used 160 RBGs and found them better than the square BGs. Keep the trap about 6" off the ground. And fill in the area under the trap. You can use 220s as long as you enclose the trap. The encloser needs to be 30" long and the trap set back 15" in the encloser. I can't rember the size of the opening.

The law back then was in square Inches. So, I bought some 220 RBGs figuring there were fewer square inches then the square 220. And that Is true. But then the DNR changed from square inches to measuring jaw spread and that made the 220 RBG illegal.

This is from the 2024 regulations so if you measure the outside of the jaws on a set rbg 220 what is your measurement?

I just happen to have a 220 RBG at hand. Though the camera angle is deceptive, I thought it was right on 8" when I got my eye down on it. Oops, i see from the drawing I didn’t measure it correctly.

In Wisconsin, on dryland there are multiple requirements to be legal ...
1) is the total square inches of the trap when set ( outside largest height, across any humps x outside max. width).and whether in or out of an enclosure.
2) maximum outside height when set is 7 1/2 inches without being in an enclosed. For a RBG this would be the largest outside diameter as the trap can be oriented in any position. From Seldon's picture above the RBG220 would not be legal without an enclosure regardless of its square inches.
As a generalization, the 160 is the largest dryland conibear trap that can be used without a enclosed. Some older square jaw 220s may qualify within the 7 1/2 inch set height; but, to be sure your trap meets the requirements always measure your set traps.
